Crinkle Finish Singer SewHandy in Matching Suitcase
This is yet another example of the
many variations of Singer toy sewing machines that were manufactured and marketed
during the company's long and illustrious production history. This is
the crinkle beige finish 7-spoke model SewHandy and it comes in a matching suitcase
specially fitted to hold the machine. There is even a little elastic holder
for the matching beige crinkle finish clamp. The suitcase is in very good
condition inside and out. The machine and clamp are in excellent condition.
The machine does have the thread tensioner disks, spring, and retaining nut
parts although they do not show in the picture. Included is a darling
1953 dated instruction booklet titled "How to use your Singer SewHandy:"
Don't let this great example slip by if you are looking for something special
to add to your Singer toy collection.

1926
Singer Model 20 TSM in Original Box
This 1926 era Model 20 is in outstanding condition
and comes complete with a hard-to-find variation of the original box.
This model was produced into the 1930's and my guess is that this box was one
of the later variations that was given a more "up-to-date" look. The graphics
are super, picturing a young girl sewing little clothes on her Model 20, surrounded
by three very lifelike dolls. There is some wear to the box, but overall
it displays well. The machine itself is in excellent condition and looks
like it has seen very little use. The paint is excellent---the metal work
is still retains its mirror-like shine. The clamp is present and also
included is the original little screwdriver. If you are looking for a
really well-kept example in an unusual box, this is the one for you!

Model 20 4-Spoke Toy Sewing Machine in the Box
This toy sewing machine, dating from
1910, was the very first model that Singer produced. It is recognizable
by the design of the handwheel which is referred to the X-wheel or the 4-spoke.
This machine is often considered to be historically significant in that it was
the one that launched what would become Singer's incredibly successful idea
of marketing their name to generations of future sewing machine consumers.
This example is not only in excellent condition---it comes complete with the
proper original box. The proper box for this model is smaller in size
than the box that was used for subsequent models of the Singer 20, the salient
feature being that in order for this machine to fit in the box the little wooden
knob on the handwheel had to be unscrewed and removed. That probably explains
why although these early machines are seen with some degree of regularity,
so few of them with these early boxes are ever found. What was the point
of keeping the box if the machine had to be "disassembled" every time the little
girl wanted to put it away. This example looks like it saw little or no
use as it is in excellent condition and complete with its clamp. The black
paint is shiny, the gold decals are excellent, and the nickeled metalwork is
bright with no rust. The box has been reinforced with brown tape inside
the top and around the outside of the bottom, and although it shows the expected
wear at the edges it displays well. This Singer toy sewing machine is
in top-notch collector condition.

Smooth
Tan Finish Singer SewHandy Machine Only
If you are looking for the just the
machine pictured above in the same smooth tan finish (but without the box),
here it is. This example is also in super condition and marked "Made in
Great Britain". It features the same beige solid construction handwheel,
numbered thread routing, and upper thread tensioner. This example likewise
shows minimal signs of use.

Unusual
French Singer Sew Handy Toy Sewing Machine in Box
These unusual colored 1950's Singer Sew Handy TSM's
are rarely found in this country, and are certainly less common than the beautiful
little red and blue American Singer toys that you are more apt to find.
I have seen the French Singers in a pale metallic green color before, but this
is another color yet. I guess I would call it a silvery metallic "mocha",
and quite different in color altogether from the shiny tan or crinkle brownish-beige
SewHandy's that you see. I have included a number of pictures so you can
get a good look at this pretty machine. Condition-wise it's very, very
nice with just a little paint missing from the edges of the clamp and from the
V-notch on the machine's base. The decals are excellent and it is complete
with the colorful French language instructions. There is also a cute French
pattern for doll clothes that has been opened but does not appear to have been
used. The box is in good condition overall with some minor edge scuffs.
If you are a serious Singer collector, this one is a must!

1914
Singer Model 20 TSM in the Box
This
was Singer's second model design and it features a nickel plated spiral handwheel
with 8 spokes. The thread tension regulator was added to this model (which
the earlier 1910 era 4-spoke model lacked), but the thread route is not numbered
on this model machine---that would come as an "improvement" on later models.
The groove for the table clamp is flat and squared off on this version rather
than the V-shape groove that would be seen on the next models. This example
comes complete with its table hold-down clamp and its original box. The
box that was used for this model is the same size as the one that was used for
the 1910 model, which means that in order to fit the machine in the box one
had to remove the wooden handle and screw on the wheel. (In later models
the box was made a little larger so the handle did not have to be removed for
storage.) This example is complete with the little screw driver that was
provided to remove it. This machine is in supurb condition---there
are just a couple of small nicks in the finish where the clamp was affixed,
but overall it is extremely bright and shiny and one of the nicest condition-wize
that we have had. It is complete with its seam guide (a piece that is
almost always missing) as well as the original instructions dated 1914.
The child that owned it "practiced" sewing on them, but she obviously gave up
the craft after several tries and put the machine back up on the shelf for the
next 90 years. The box shows some minor wear and the outside of the box
bottom has been carefully reinforced at the seams with wide brown paper tape
to stabilize its condition. This 1914 model is one of the harder Singer
toys to find, especially still in the box, and this example is one you are not
likely to ever find in nicer condition.

Blue Singer Model 20-10 TSM in Case These brightly colored Singers were made for just a short period of time and are avidly sought after by collectors. This example is a striking robin's egg blue color and comes with its sturdy 10" x 13" x 4" blue and white fold-out case, which is a size larger than the ones that are typically found. There are also two instruction guides included---a booklet about the machine as well as a separate sheet of instructions for setting up and storing the machine in the carrying case. This machine is in excellent condition with one apology---close inspection of the handwheel reveals a very tight crack in two of the spokes. There is no sign whatsoever of abuse to this machine, and my inclination is to say that it came from the factory this way. And if you are looking for other colored Singers be sure to check out the red one I also have for sale!

Singer Model 20 Toy Sewing Machine
Singer not only made hand-crank toy sewing
machines for children, they also made several different electric versions, I
guess for those children who really did want a machine "just like Mom's".
This is the black Model 20 machine equipped with a real Singer electric motor
and a belt drive to power the machine. Plug it in and go! This toy
is all original and complete with its table clamp as well.

Mint Singer SewHandy in the Box The woman I bought this from told me she got it as a child in the 50's and never played with it. There is no doubt in my mind as to the truth of this story because this machine looks brand-new! It is in the kind of condition that literally takes your breath away. The stitchplate has a mirror-finish shine, and the black paint and decals are excellent. I cannot find one single flaw to tell you about on the entire machine. It is marked Made in Great Britain and features a black 7-spoke wheel. The matching black clamp is included, still in its original envelope, and there is no evidence it has ever been applied to the base of the machine. This toy's original box has just a few edge scuffs here and there. The icing on the cake is the brightly colored instruction manual, still in its original wrap. If you are looking for a Singer in the best possible condition, this one is guaranteed to satisfy!

Singer Model 20-10 "SewHandy" Toy Sewing Machine in the Box
This 1950's example is in super
condition and looks as though it was hardly played with! It comes to you
in its original box and the graphics are wonderful! What little girl wouldn't
have wanted one! The machine itself is shiny and bright and complete with
its table clamp, original instruction booklet, and even its own little screwdriver.

8-Spoke Singer Model 20 Toy Sewing Machine This Singer 20 is known as the second model toy machine, featuring a nickel plated 8-spoke handwheel (later models were made with just 7-spokes), and made without the thread route numbering system that was added to the later models. This hard-to-find early toy Singer, dating from 1914, was well cared for by its previous owner and is now ready to go on display with the rest of your Singer family of machines.

Singer Model 20 Toy Sewing Machine in the Box
The discussion often arises as to
whether these little antique Singer sewing machines were salesman samples, toys,
or actual hand-operated sewing machines. In fact, because Isaac Merritt
Singer was a shrewd businessman as well as a brilliant inventor, they were marketed
in as many ways as possible. Advertisements geared toward children, especially
during the holidays, promoted them as "a way to learn the basic principles
of sewing while making Dolly's clothes", while ads directed toward adults tout
them as being "easily packed into a lady's traveling bag or suitcase, handy
and convenient for vacation use". This Singer 20 example is known as the
1922 model, and features the black painted 7-spoke handwheel with a nickel plated
rim. It does not have the thread route numbering system that was added to their
models in later years. This machine is in excellent condition with nearly
100% of the original black paint and gold decals intact, and no rust on the
metal parts. A portion of the felt on the bottom pad is missing.
But it has seen little if any use and has been carefully stored over the years,
and it includes the original clamp. The cardboard box has some scuffing,
particularly around the edges, and there is a tear forming that goes across
the box top which you can see in the pictures. The box bottom has been
reinforced with brown Kraft tape. Overall I would grade the box as pretty
good, although certainly not excellent. I often see these machines without
their boxes or clamps in antique shops priced higher than what you can buy this
one in the box for.

Smooth
Tan Finish Singer SewHandy in the Box
This adorable child's Singer features
the smooth tan painted finish and solid handwheel construction. The machine
is in very good condition, including the Singer decal and emblem. The
machine is marked "Made in Great Britain". But perhaps best of all is
that this example still retains its original 1950's vintage green and pink box,
along with a colorful and wonderfully illustrated "picture book" style instruction
manual. The Singer Manufacturing Company was at its peak at this time,
and their children's machines were one more way to promote the company name
and expand their worldwide sewing machine empire. The cover of this instruction
booklet, with its images of girls from around the globe, says it all!
The variety of boxes and cases that Singer produced over the years for their
toy line is a testament to their incredible popularity at that time. And
for Singer collectors today all of these variations make for a wealth of collecting
opportunity!

Made
in Turkey Singer Model 20 TSM
There
has been much discussion in toy sewing machine circles surrounding the classification
of this little Singer machine. Is it a genuine Singer or is it a reproduction?
Bob Campbell, in his excellent TSM online chat forum called the TSM Digest,
summed it up this way: "The made-in-Turkey is a genuine Singer. They tried
marketing the toy as a classic re-issue of the original 7-spoke. It was not
up to Singer's usual production standards, however to me it is simply not correct
to call this a reproduction since it was sold and made by Singer in the late
1980's. There are some very subtle differences between the early 7-spokes and
the K-20 (as Singer designated the made-in-Turkey.) It's not a fake ...
it's genuine Singer. In good condition it's just as valuable as the early
7-spokes and probably a little rarer since Singer produced it for relatively
fewer years than the early 7-spokes." This example is in great condition
and still with its original box with instruction manual. If you are a
serious Singer collector, this one is a must!
