jones.jpg (24119 bytes)"Jones" Salesman Sample Horse-Drawn Mowing Machine    I found this wonderful antique salesman sample horse-drawn mower right here in California when I was back here checking up on a rental that needed work a few years ago.  We decided to go to a local street fair for some sightseeing and exercise at 4:00 in the morning, and there it was in a toy dealer's booth ........This one started me on a campaign to own more, many more.  It has been a challenge, but I have been able to add a few more.  This model is in pretty good condition and after having seen another example with the same paint scheme I believe this ones paint to be original.  As with others I have seen the mower bar was made to work, but is a bit sticky and gummed up from sitting so long.  The cast iron cutout seat is super, as are the transmission and brake mechanism.  Where do you find them, and when is another going to come along!!!

Traded Away!

haypress1.jpg (25442 bytes)" The Lighting Hay Press" Salesman Sample Patented 1885 Hay Press  I got this interesting salesman sample here in California from a dealer friend.  It has a great look and is unusually large for this type of thing, so large I had trouble getting a picture of all of it in one frame.  But it is small compared to how big the actual piece would be.  Looking at the other pictures, the round wheel is where you would hook up one or more horses that would walk around it activating the press that was inside the framework through a system of ropes and pulleys.  I have seen ads for this device in Scientific America and other early farm magazines.  The outer portion is in pretty good condition and the writing and patent info is nice.  There is a part of the press inside that seems to be missing, but from what I can determine it is nothing more than a block of wood with hooks set into it, the plunger if you will.       SOLD!

Small Oiler / Oil Can Collection  Here is an interesting collection of approx 30 oilers.   It use to be you could find and buy these small nickeled oilers at any given shop or show, but those days have passed.  Almost every one of these has a subtle difference should you think you are seeing repeats.  There are at least 3 different ones made for bicycles, a couple of marked Comptometer, a couple with decals for film projectors, and so forth.   These and other similar small oilers were given with the purchase of an assortment of everyday devices that were sold back when.  You can find ones marked with fishing reel manufactures names, roller skate makers, (there is one of these here), sewing machines and a host of others.   Other highlights here are the glass Gem at the top in the middle.  The bottom of the glass is marked that it was made by the P. D. and Co. the company that made the famous eggbeater that is so hard to find.  The small blue plastic one is also a rarity and it is the only one in this small size that I have ever owned.  There is also the Sterling Silver Tiffany one in the back that was actually sold as a vermouth dispenser for those drinking Martinis and who longed to actually be looked upon as a working sort, instead of just lubing up the system with another drink.  SOLD!

The Monarch Double Slant Wheel Hog Oiler from Iowa   This is a rare and difficult to find hogoiler.  It is damage free, meaning no welds cracks or other major damage.  For those who want a short history lesson these were developed and designed roughly from just before the turn of the last century in to the 20's or 30's when the advent of pesticides relegated most of them to the scrap iron heap out in the back forty or down the nearest gully, where most of today's rarest and best ones come from.  During their hey-day, there were 100 or more different designs available.  The basic idea was that by using the hog or pigs natural tendency to rub, scratch and root, he would do that on or against this and when the wheels turned, the oil in the reservoir would come up getting on the pig and help to control the lice and bug problem as well as keep those cute pink ones from getting sunburned.  I have seen a couple of the best collections and have handled some great ones in the past, and this is a real good one.     SOLD!

Note:  I currently have a collection of 29 different Hog Oilers for sale on our sister site  www.Patented-Antiques.com

prince.jpg (17447 bytes)The Prince Combo Brace / Wrench  These unusual wrenches were patented just about 100 years ago.  This one saw little use during that time, and is in near new condition and shows little if any evidence of abuse or even use.  It is one of the nicest condition examples of this hard to find combination tool that I have ever had, or seen.  It is time to upgrade!!    SOLD!

coes36.jpg (11597 bytes)Coe's Key Lock Adjustable Nut Wrench 36"   This unusual nut wrench is a favorite with those who like them big.  They came in a range of sizes between 24" and 72" long with just a handful of those larger ones known.  This example is in very nice condition and shows little evidence of hard use.  It was a neat idea to be able to quickly adjust to the right size and then slam the wedge into place before you did the final adjust.  Holding one of these up while you tried adjusting it an inch or so with just the screw would have been a tiring experience I imagine.  A hard to find and very graphic wrench!!     SOLD!
