Child Size Ox-Tongue Iron with Engraved Sides
This is a unusual and seldom seen
mini ox tongue iron. The body is solid but meant to resemble it's full-size
slug-heated counterpart. The decoration on the side is of a fire breathing
dragon. It is very detailed and very finely cast. A special little
3 1/2" iron! Highly recommend!

Myers
Patent Double Point Miniature Lace Iron
According to Judy Politzer's reference in the classic reference Tuesday's
Children, Reuben Meyers was granted a patent for this pressing iron as a
"lace iron", although it undoubtedly doubled as an iron small enough to be easily
handled by a child. Hailing from Mount Joy, PA this iron is beautifully
designed and manufactured to the same exacting standards of workmanship that
the other assorted Meyers irons are known for. This example is the smaller
size.

1893 Center Mount Removable Handle Child Size Iron
You see this iron from time to time, but I will

This is an uncommon iron and the only examples I have ever had or sold have come from old

Sensible
No. 6 Sad Iron Variation Marked "R.M.W. & Co."
A variation of the typical Sensible No. 6 little iron, this one bears a patent
date of June 13 '88 cast into the edge of the handle, a year later than the
original Streeter patent, and according to Frank & Judy Politzer it is probably
a Canadian look-a-like. Note the detailing in the wooden handle grip.
The base of the iron measures 3 7/8" and is turned up polisher-style at one
end.

Streeter's
Sensible No. 6 Detachable Handle Child's Sad Iron
You could make an interesting collection of antique irons by simply collecting
all of the many variations and sizes of irons made by Nelson R. Streeter & Co.
of Upstate New York. The Sensible No. 6 is one of the smallest that they
manufactured and is a 4" double-pointed removable handle style patented in the
late 1800's. The spring-loaded thumb latch makes for a secure fit, and
this is the version that features indented side panels on the base. There
is a bit of texture from pitting on the top and top edges of the base, but the
nickeled portions on the sides and the entire bottom are smooth and have most
of their original nickel remaining and the wooden grip is excellent.

Stevens Child Size Sad Iron
I don't believe I have seen this iron pictured
or identified in any of the books, but given the exquisite design, the style
of the handle, and the high quality of the casting I am willing to wager that
it is one more in the line of J. & E. Stevens. The wafer-thin base measures
just under 3" long.

Little
Removable Handle Toy SadIron This Mrs. Potts style iron
is different from the norm. Note how the ends of the handle are shaped from round to
rectangular. I have never seen this before. In fact I'm not even
sure what material the handle is made from---I believe it to be a very
dense, smooth, tight grained wood, or possibly some sort of composition. The nickel
plating is in excellent condition. The base is marked USA and measures
3.75" long with one end turned up polisher-style.

Little
Nickel Plated Toy Sad
Iron This iron is larger and
different than the tri-bump handle little irons typically seen. It
measures 3.25" long. Note the gracefully rounded form of the handle
and the beveled
tail of the base. At first glance it looks similar to others that are
found, but is actually quite different. In fact it is the only

Child-Size Sad Iron The iron
is marked M OR as well as Kenrick and the layout of the letters on the body
of this very nice iron is interesting. It is English and by the foremost
maker of irons and other cast iron from that country. It measures 4 1/2"
long and has a rolled strap handle. A nice piece.

This is a hard to find little iron!! Chalfant irons are usually thought of as
gas jet irons. This example is not and says it it a patented iron.
I could not find the patent. The condition is second to none.

Cap Iron This oval base pipe-handle cap iron was
manufactured by Kenrick, the renown English foundry. The marking indicates it

Antique Cast Iron Shell Double Point Iron
This
small double point iron, dubbed The Baby, has great form and look. The body is unmarked.
The outer shell is cast iron instead of pressed steel. It must have
been far more expensive to produce than those more common ones. I wonder how much more it cost
in its day?

A very nice example. The bottom has a curvature for

#0 "Chattanooga" Implement Co. Toy Iron
A very nice example of the smallest size of this iron.
Over the years I have seen just a few of these irons, usually in larger
sizes, and no more than a couple of them in this #0 size. I am not
sure if this outfit made these as part of their regular business, gave these
out as advertising, or ........? It is a pretty hard to come
by iron in this small size.

Primitive Blacksmith Made Iron w/ Unusual Handle
This small early iron has a very interesting look. It is
forged from one piece and then the handle was fold up and over, the area in
the center flattened out, and the the front tip was curled into a tight
ball. A great piece of workmanship. Different, rare and nice!!

sought after toy iron made by EJ Kahn Co. of Chicago. Probably sold at

Miniature Graduated Size Brass
Irons Each is a different
size, and each is marked with the name of what I assume is the maker---A. B. Webb.
They are numbered 0, 1 and 2. They measure approximately 2 1/4", 3",
and 3 1/2". Note the nicely twisted brass handle supports.
It's not real apparent in my photos but the shape of the base where it comes
to the point near the toe of each is asymmetrical, with one side being more
rounded than the other.

Child-Size
Alba "Split Chimney" Charcoal Iron
This Portuguese child's charcoal iron measures just 4" in length. It has a
very unusual design with the top half of the chimney opening up as one-piece
with the rest of the iron top, with a latch at the mouth of the stack.
There are some antique children's irons that are amazingly detailed and were
probably produced in very limited quantities, and this is certainly one of
those. It's full size counterpart is hard enough to find---this little one
even more so, especially in this nice condition and complete with its inside
grate.

#1 Child Size Toy Sad Iron
Wapak was a big name in the cast iron cookware arena during the
late 19th century, and like most other producers of cast
iron products also put out a line of sad irons. They can be found
in sizes from this the smallest toy, up to 20 pounders or so for
Tailors.

These were give-a ways at one of the Centennials or early Worlds Fairs back
near the turn of the last century. The detailing and workmanship are
great.The handle latch is operable and overall it is in very nice
condition. A hard to find little iron. Every

6" Stevens Child Size Toy Sad Iron This one is marked
with a Star and # 6 inside it. It is a Stevens iron.The condition is
nice. These irons came in a variety of graduated sizes and
this is one of the smaller examples at just over 2 1/2" long. I
have seen them with different numbers in the casting, and they are one of
the more unusual of the Stevens line.

Size Toy Sad Iron This one is marked
"25" in bold casting on the top. It is in original finish and the
wooden handle is nice. You do not find them in this condition very
often. One of the larger models at 4" long.

This is a very nice looking and early sleeve iron marked "Walker Boston".
It was probably marketed as being suitable for adult use as well as for
kids. Finely cast, nicely marked with the name, and in super
condition!

Teardrop / Heart Shape Iron This is a different style iron.
Very simple and primitive looking, teardrop bordering on heart-shaped.
Think of the work involved in forming the rod and flat handle. Different!

French Sad Iron with Fox and Crow
This child's iron is embossed in high relief with an image from the French
fable of the Fox and the Crow, which goes along the lines of the wise fox
coveting the piece of cheese held in the mouth of the crow, so he flatters
him---whereupon the foolish crow opens his beak to thank his admirer and in
the process lets the cheese fall right into the fox's mouth.
Moral of the story---when someone pays you a compliment keep your mouth shut. Huh?

a winged fellow riding a lion or other creature. The tag on the bottom
