Special Note Concerning
Iron Prices: Sad Irons / Pressing Irons Prices are evolving:
After 20 years of steady increases in values,
which culminated in a bubble burst, iron prices have now settled back to levels of the past.
Prices seen reflect actual recent sale results from this website or a general price that is more in line w/ today's market.
Irons
pictured without prices represent earlier sales whose sale results are outdated and do not accurately reflect current market values.
Ebay results closely reflect current market values for many sad irons. Check eBay completed / SOLD results to see current values for
many antique irons.

Black
Blown Glass Slikenstone / Smoothing Stone Glass rubbing stones are believed
to be some of the oldest ironing devices known. These glass irons were
used cold on damp material with pressure applied by both hands to remove the
wrinkles. This piece is from the long-time Glissman collection.

Harper Patent Sleeve Iron This style or shape iron was designed for
ironing sleeves. The Harper
is a very unusual example to find. The shape is near unique, and was sure to catch
the eye of the onlooker. It had all the needed features to turn out the
perfectly ironed sleeve. It was fat or bulbous in the middle, it ha a very
pointed end out in front, and
the tail had a polishing feature for the perfect finish. Everything the little lady needed to
turn out the perfect garment in one iron. The handle lock system was a patented idea
and there is the info for it on the front of the handle. It was an
idea that leaves a bit to be desired, and I bet created some bruised toes and dents
when it fell off.
Different!! Very Good . . . . . .SOLD!
The
Crown 7" Plaiter Iron Plaiting irons
are a rare variation of a fluting iron that were used to put pleats instead
of ruffles in such things as curtains, kilts, and bed canopies.
The North Brothers Catalog from 1912 attempts to list out how simple and easy
this device is to use and how useful it will be in the home or shop, but I imagine
that by this time or point in history women in the house were starting to dream
about other things to do with their time. Images of dancing and having
fun like in the roaring 20's or god forbid voting and having a say in what they
were or were not going to do were beginning to get in the way of pleating, ironing
and other household chores. Phyllis Schafly's worst nightmare was beginning
to form way before her time. Perhaps she has one of these as a remembrance
of how it use to be, or how she wishes it still was. The 1912 Crown catalog
I have lists only the 10" model of these devices, and we have had that size
a couple times over the years, but this is the first we have ever seen of a
7" model. We also have one by an entirely different company that must
have been bought out by North Brothers some years earlier.
Good . . . . . SOLD
6" Crown Plaiter /
Iron
This is the rare mini size Crown Plaiter. The more typical
version that is seen is 10". Neither are common. Plaiting was a
thing done by people with too much time on their hands, or with enough money to
hire somebody else to perform the task for them. These devices were used
to put plaits, or small folds, in fabric such as drapery tops, bed surrounds, or
the bottom pieces on couches and chairs that keep dirt from
getting under there and give the cat a place to hide.
My feeling is that if more people still plated and pleated the
world would be a different place today. Whether for the better or worse is
open to debate. I think the passing of this task was one of the
primary reasons that the women's lib movement was able to catch on. They simply had to much spare
time on their hands when they stopped doing chores like this so they started
thinking about things like voting.
The overall condition is nice. There are no cracks or
breaks. The counter weight and slugs you would heat are missing. The
indexing pins are still there.

Hoods
Patent Soapstone Polishing Iron This is a very unusual version
of a polishing iron. The main body is made of soapstone. The Hood
patent soapstone spade shape iron is well known, and we have several listed
for sale on our regular pages, but this is the very hard to find double pointed
polisher model. It is about 10 times harder to find than the spade shape
version. Soapstone has been used in a number of applications because of
its superior heat retaining qualities and Mr. Hood made many of the spade shape
ones in different sizes, but very few of these DP polishers ever show up.
A nice iron!

Scandinavian
Figural Horse Mangle Board /Iron
This mangle board is very nice. It is from
a large old time collection and is a nice example. The carving on
the board is deep, dramatic and has nice detail. The paint is original and
nice for the most part. The horse has a nice form, shows good
patina to the handle portion, and the missing color near the ear you see is not objectionable.
