Amazoc
Mexican Engraved Irons
This.
The
Amozoc Iron Collection Amozoc irons
originate
from Mexico and were the work of skilled artists and metal engravers. The work is
reminiscent of engraving found on guns, spurs, belt buckles, chap decoration,
and other cowboy / Western items from the same time period. It is thought that they were made by
artists and engravers as a means to keep busy in-between larger commission
work, sold or given as gifts, or made as examples of the level of quality of an
individual's work. Some are marked with the artist's name or initials, and others with
names of loved ones, children, or wives. Some are very detailed and well
done, some a bit cruder. Be sure to look at all the individual pictures to
see the level of detail on some, including the work that went into
fashioning the handles. And note the variety of sizes, indicated by
the ruler in each picture. An amazing collection!!

Recuerdo
Engraved Amazoc Iron Amozoc irons
originate from Mexico and were the work of skilled artists and metal
engravers. The work is reminiscent of engraving found on guns, spurs, belt
buckles, chap decoration, and other cowboy / Western items from the same
time period. This example is extremely detailed and well-executed. In
addition to the design work it is engraved "Requerdo", which loosely
translates to "memory". It measures 2 3/4 inches long and the condition is second to none!!

Amazoc
Iron This is by far the
nicest Amazoc iron we have ever offered for sale. It is only 1 1/2" long,

incredible. Highly

Engraved Amazoc 1 3/4" Sad Iron
Even though these irons are from Mexico, they
are the hand work of the finest craftsman, and not to be confused with the cheap
reproductions of common sadirons that have recently come from that country.
These highly engraved, finely crafted hard steel decorative irons come from
the Puebla area of central Mexico, which is noted for its beautiful and artistic
metalwork including that of the highly regarded Mexican bit, spur, gun and knife
makers of the past decades. This example measures 1 3/4" long and has
the characteristic thin base and delicate engraving. It also exhibits
the circle of tiny dots around the handle sockets where a punch was used to
tighten the bond between the base of the little iron and the decorative handle.

Swan Irons
This.
Hard-to-Find
5" Swan Iron The 5" swan
iron is always a favorite of not just iron collectors but anyone who appreciates
the beauty and rarity of figural cast iron antiques. Authentic 5" swans
don't come up for sale very often---there are oftentimes reproductions of these
irons offered up on ebay and elsewhere on the Internet, but there is no comparison
between those repops and an original. This example is guaranteed old and
authentic. As with many of the early ones, this swan suffered the all-too-common
fate of a broken beak somewhere in its past. Our consignor had it professionally
restored a number of years ago, and the repair is barely noticeable unless pointed
out.

And it is in super condition!
That is original gold wash finish you are seeing here. And note the strong
detailing in the casting of the feathers, the eyes, the tail, etc. Many
times these large swan irons are found with the beaks having been broken off
and / or repaired. The beak on this bird is 100% right.
These 5" swans are very graphic
in appearance, and very appealing. Highly recommend!

Authentic Early Little Swan Irons
Most collectors of child-size irons are aware that the little swan irons have
been widely reproduced. These two swan irons are guaranteed old and original.
They have the sure sign of authenticity---the "runner" or flattened bump on
the chest that authenticates the early casting process. They have good
detailing and nice smooth bottoms. These beautiful little swan irons measure
2.5 inches and 2.75 inches and are complete with their matching little trivets.

Small
Swan Iron with Original Paint Here's an antique Swan iron that is sure
to stand out amongst the rest of the flock! It is so rare to find swans
with traces of their original paint. On this 2 3/4" example not only is
there gold on the swan itself, but it even retains gold on its matching trivet.
With good detail in the feathers and face, and with the well-defined break mark
on the chest, there is no doubt as to it's authenticity and its age. Yo 're
guaranteed to fall in love with this one!

Small Flower / Leaf Irons
These are the tools that were used in the antique millinery, dressmaking, costume-making,
and other assorted fabric trades to make beautiful silk and velvet flowers that
adorned the fancy hats and clothing of the day. After the fabric was starched
it would have been pressed between the two heated halves of these pressing molds
to emboss the design. Typically these brass and iron tools are found in
much larger sizes. The smallest one here measures about 1 inch and the
largest one about 2.5 inches. All three of these small leaf irons are
intricately detailed and make for a great display.

Large
Graphic Flower Iron This is one of the largest, most graphic and highly detailed examples of a
flower iron which I acquired several years ago when I bought out the entire inventory from
a Connecticut millenary firm which had gone out of business. This one is a special example.
Good . . . . . SOLD
Nearly all of the flower and leaf irons listed below came from the Norm Kelly collection
of pressing irons. We sold him a number of these about 10 years ago
after we bought a large number of them, which had come out of a closed
factory in Connecticut, at an auction in NY. It was the
largest stash I had ever seen and we had a lot of fun moving them and
dispersing them. Norm was in line to get some of the nicest ones and he had
the pick of the collection.

Here are three large and very graphic examples. The one

4
Vintage Flower & Leaf Iron Cutters
From what I have heard each flower iron is
supposed to have a matching cutter to cut the fabric before it was placed in the
mold. Its rare to find the matching pairs, as typically over the years the
cutters would have gotten separated from the irons. I do not think any of these
are for the irons above, but they will display nicely.

Removable Handle Brim Irons These 3 hat

hundreds of other brim or shackle irons, but only 2 or three of this style. The one on the right has a swinging adjustable feature controlled by a part of
the handle to allow the user to have more control when forming the brim.

The last user got tired of keeping track of the slugs, or lost it, and filled the
cavity with lead. The lead expanded as it
cooled and did crack the iron iron in several places. The rear door is
still present. It is solid as a
rock though. Very Unusual!!!
On the right is an electric
adjustable
shackle brim iron.
I have never seen an electric moveable shackle hat iron before. Think of
the quality of the work it could produce being a constant even
temperature as you were forming and smoothing the brim of you
latest creation. I wonder how well the new all wood
examples I saw on the internet would work with no heat at all.
Not too well I imagine as you can no longer order them.

An
Assortment of Unusual Hatter's Irons Irons
for hats, caps and bonnets are a fascinating sub-category of iron collecting,
and antique hatter's irons are sought out not only by iron collectors for display
but also by contemporary makers of handmade hats looking for the tools and devices
that were used in the last century to do the myriad of specialized jobs associated
with their trade. Numerous firms, located primarily in New England, were
engaged in producing supplies for the hat industry. Crowns need to be
shaped, brims had to be curled, creases needed to be ironed in, felt nap had
to be smoothed, and ironing devices that came to be named tollikers, shackles,
hatter's shells, etc. were manufactured in the mid to late 1800's to respond
to the growing industry. Offered here are an assortment of hatter's irons
that were part of the Glissman Iron Collection. Be sure to look at all
of the pictures. There are a total of 12 irons, several with moveable
flanges, several with double grooves, all are unusual and interesting shapes.

Adjustable
Double Groove Hat Makers Iron
This is a rare hatter's shackle that has an
unusual adjustment mechanism. One groove
is fixed, uniform in width, and looks pretty standard. The second groove is moveable
and has a really odd shape / configuration. It's adjustable in width and
the depth slopes from something at one end to nothing at the other.......perhaps for the brim of cowboy hats?
Be sure to look at all the pictures. Very nice!!

Hat Makers Removable Handle Brim Iron This
is one I have not seen or had before. The detachable handle design is a very unusual form
for a hatters iron. The handle mechanism has been professionally
and carefully repaired / rebuilt. It looks as if it was broken and
repaired by brazing and machining new brass parts to the existing
handle. The handle latch operates but not smoothly. Unusual
and would be priced quite a bit higher were it not for the repair.
