Phillips Patent Plow Plane
w/ 8 Cutters
This is a very nice patented plow plane that is in overall excellent condition. Russell Phillips was first
granted the patent for this design plane in 1867. He hailed from Gardiner, Maine.
He was later issued a couple more patents for improvements to the design.
His later improved models look completely different from this and more like a Mayo's
patent. This is one of the earlier models of the original design that was offered before the
"improved" version was introduced in about 1871.
Note the original Rosewood handle and graceful horn.
It has a small owners stamp that reads D. O. Card. 8 cutters are included
counting the T & G installed in it. The depth stop is present. A fine example that deserves a place in any collection
focused on patented metallic planes of the 19th century. Different, Unusual
and Nice!!

Phillips Patent
"Improved" Plow Plane
This is a very nice example of a later "improved" model Phillips Plow
Plane. Russell Phillips was first
granted the patent for this design plane in 1867. These later improved models look completely different from his
earlier "box" style planes and more like a Mayo's patent. This
"improved" version was introduced in about 1871.
Note the original Rosewood handle and graceful horn.
The depth stop is present. A fine example that deserves a place in any collection
focused on patented metallic planes of the 19th century. Different, Unusual
and Nice!!

Walker
Patent Plow Plane This is a crazy
design for a plow plane. It has a series of metal plates that can be
shifted to different positions to conform to the wood and the the 15 cutters
that were provided. I bet it was not a popular item. Edwin
walker is also known for his patented ice cream scoop, and for holding the
patent on one of the most well designed and popular corkscrews.

Patent Plow Plane This is a
nice condition plow plane. These unusual planes have a series of metal plates that can be
shifted to different positions to conform to the wood profile, and be better able to use the 15 cutters
that were provided. . Edwin walker is also known for his patented ice cream scoop, and for holding the
patent on one of the most well designed and popular corkscrews.

He hailed from Gardiner, Maine. He was later issued a couple more patents
for improvements to the design. This is one of the later models of this original

The condition of this example is wonderful. Note the original Rosewood handle
and graceful horn. The thumb screw for the depth stop has been modified to
facilitate tightening it, it should be round but has been squared off to allow for
a better grip. The rest of the plane is original and very nice.
A fine example that deserves a place in any collection focused on Patented metallic
planes of the 19th century. It is a winner. Super!!

Phillips
Patent Plow Plane This Phillips Patent
Plow plane is in good condition. This is one of the later models of this original
design that was offered before the "improved" version that looks like
a Mayo patent was introduced in about 1871.
The top of the handle is chipped, and the rest of the plane is original and
nice. There are no cutters.

Phillips Patented Improved
Plow Plane This is one of the later models by the same name
as the plane above. This example is marked on all the parts #66 which I assume
is the assembly #. Overall the condition is good with some of the decoration
and highlights still remaining on portions. The fence does not seem to want
to tighten on the rod properly, but I did not fuss with it. The small depth
stop and screw for it are missing.

Siegley
# 2 Combination Plane w / 18 Cutters in Original Box
Jacob
Siegley was based in PA. He made both bench planes and
combination planes like this. His combination planes were a work in progress and one will
rarely find 2 that are exactly alike. He made many subtle and
significant changes to the design trying to get it just right.
Nice
overall condition. Some nickel losses and minor
spots of rust that will clean. Most of the cutters are full length.
This is an earlier version w/ unslotted cutters. The japanning is
original and nearly complete. Nice condition. Good +. . . . .250.00

Sears
Craftsman No. 3728 Sargent
1080 Combination Plane Great condition
in original pasteboard box. Plane looks to have seen little to no use.
Light rust on some plane parts that will clean, and on the cutters. A nice example
overall. Good + . . . . . $125.00

Fulton
/ Sargent
1080 Combination Plane Sargent made
this for Sears who at the time was offering a line of woodworking planes
under the name of Fulton. I believe this was before they introduced
the Craftsman line of tools. Great condition. Plane looks to have seen little to no use.
Light rust on some of the over 20 cutters. Short rods present. A nice example
overall. Good + . . . . . $150.00
SOLD!!

Pattern
Makers Plane This is a nice set. The plane itself has the early
look of an English Spiers, Norris or Mathieson style plane. Most of the 11
cutters are marked Buck Brothers. A couple have been replaced. The 11
bottoms lock on in the rear on a dovetail as can be seen, and through the front
handle in front. A nice example.

Mayo's
Improved Patented Plow Plane This unusual patented plane
Is most commonly referred to as a Mayo's Patent, but is also known as "The Boss
Plane" which is cast into the side as well as the patent information. This
plane went through a series of design changes during its few short years of manufacture,
and this is one of the last variations. Several people marketed it and Mayo was
the final owner of the rights and patent. One of the nicest features if that
the name Mayo is spelled out in script on the brass or gunmetal screws. Earlier
versions are known as the Phillips Patent Plow, and were marketed by Babson and
Reppelier of the Boston Tool Co.
Good + . . . . . $2395.00 SOLD
Mayo
Patent "The Boss" Plow Plane
Here is a very nice
Mayo's Improved Patented Plow Plane. The last patent for this plow plane was issued in
1875 and that date can be found on the plane in two areas. The skate is marked
and the fence are both marked with the date. The name "The
Boss Plane is cast into the body near the front, and he name Mayo is
spelled out in script on the brass or gunmetal screws. A very
nice touch.
This type or style
plow plane went through a series of design changes during its few short years of manufacture, and this
is one of the last variations. Several people marketed this style plane and Mayo was the final owner of the rights and
patent. Earlier versions are known as the Phillips Patent Plow, and were
marketed by Babson and Reppelier
of the Boston Tool Co. All of this is explained in Roger Smiths
PTAMPIA Vol 1 & 2.
The gold wash finish is approx 80% and there is no
pitting or other major problems. The one apology is
the handle horn missing, and I am working on having that replaced as you
look at this rare and magnificent piece of woodworking history. These
planes have been know to go into the mid 4 figures with cutters and in no
better condition. This is an opportunity that will not last long, and
this plane is priced to sell.
Good + . . . . . .$1295.00 SOLD!!
Phillips Patent Plow Plane
w/ 8 Cutters
According to Roger Smiths Vol. 1 of PTAMPIA this would be an early model of
this plane. It has some characteristics of a later model given it has a
Rosewood handle. Note in one of the pics how the maker mark info on the skate
about it being a Phillips Plow plane has been over-stamped with different info
and Harlow a different maker name. Smith discusses this marking, but it
would seem there is
additional research to be done as there is little detail
explaining why this happened.
The main body is in pretty nice condition.
There is about 70% of the original black japanning, and some traces of the red
highlighting. There is no damage to the casting or cracks in the weak
areas. The Rosewood handle is pretty nice, and the delicate horn is nice.
The fence rod is here, but the fence itself has gone missing.
Also there are
8 original cutters. Most are full length. There is some minor
surface rust on a couple but it is not heavy, nor is there obvious pitting. The
cutters alone are worth the money, and the plane is actually very nice.
Opportunity!!
Good +. . . . . . $995.00 SOLD!!
Metallic
Plane Co. Plow Plane The maker stamp is
on the skate. The overall condition is nice. One of the rods is
a replacement that is barely screwed in as it is the wrong thread pitch.
The threads have not been buggered.

Siegley
#2 Combination Plane Siegley made a
number of different versions of this plow plane. This one has a screw
adjuster for the cutters and is one of the later models. The box of
cutters is missing at least one, and there are 18 or so remaining including
the harder to find beading cutters. There is one screw missing on the
outside fence. It otherwise looks good, and ready to go. Nice!!

Stanley Millers Patent Type 3 # 42 Bronze / Gunmetal Plow Plane
A beautiful early example of one of Stanley's most sought after planes.
The type 3 #42 Millers Patent Gunmetal Plow Plane was only made for 1 year
in 1874 according to the type study in Walters Stanley Tool price guide.
The bronze wrap around fence is very nice. There is no fillister bed,
but the one I have on the slightly later 42 listed below will fit. It
can be purchased separately. The blade hold down screw has lost it brass
collar. It is the proper round head screw and proper 28 TPI thread. Overall good + condition. Nice!!

the point where the front depth stop is near the front knob. There
are 11 cutters in proper box. One has been modified / rounded to be
like a scrub plane cutter. Slitter and proper depth stops. Nice!! It will be a fine user.

Millers Patent #42 Bronze Plow Plane w/ Fillister Bed
The Stanley Millers
Patent line of Combination Plow and Fillister planes is one of the most graphic,
good looking, and sought after of all manufactured patented woodworking planes.
First introduced by Stanley in 1870 this line of planes was offered for less than
30 years before being phased out in favor of the more popular and versatile Stanley
#45 / 55 series of combination planes.
This is a #42 Bronze plow plane w/ iron fillister bed and one iron fence. The #41
& 42 came equipped with an iron Fillister
Bed as this one has. It is missing its bronze wrap around fence. An iron
wrap around fence from a #41 would fit and work. These planes originally came with 9 cutters, but are usually only found with 1 cutter
as this one has. The overall condition is OK noting the typical
shortened handle horn. An historically important plane that belongs on the shelf of every serious
antique tool / plane
collection.

# 42 Millers Patent Bronze / Gunmetal Plow Plane
This #42 Millers Patent plane is a type 3A dating
from 1875. The main observable differences from a type 3 are that the screws for the bronze
wrap around fence are now a one piece un-slotted style. The
round head cutter hold down thumbscrew keeps it from being a type 4 . It is a beautiful early
example of one of Stanley's most sought after planes. The bronze wrap
around fence is very nice. The plane is in overall good +
condition. There is a small sliver out of the top of the handle, but the
horn is present and it looks pretty good. Nice!!

and nice fillister bed. The other pics below show it with and without the
fillister. It is being sold separately. The plane is in overall good +

Millers Patent #141 Nickel Plated Plow Plane Stanley introduced the 141 line of Millers Patent
planes after introducing #41 - 44 series were phased out in 1897.
The 141 was made up till the end of WWI in 1918. This one has a Sweetheart stamp
which would date it right at the end of the production period. The 141 is
basically the same as a #41 except that it has a provision for an
interchangeable nose piece, and it came with thinner cutters than the earlier
41.
The nickel on the plane and fence is about 90%. The second nose piece
is missing which it typical.

First introduced in 1870 this line of planes was offered by Stanley for less than
30 years before being phased out in favor of the more popular and versatile Stanley
#45 / 55 series of planes.
This is a #41 iron plow plane w/ fillister bed. It is proper
the way it is shown with both a straight and iron wrap around fence. The fences
are missing 3 out of 4 screws. The #41 came equipped with a Fillister
Bed, and iron wrap around fence. The #43 is the same basic plane without a

PlaneThis Stanley #41 is in very nice condition. It is a very
early model and has original split screws that are nice as well. There has

#141 SW Era Nickel Plated Millers Patent Plow Plane Here is a pretty nice example of this increasingly
popular and difficult to find plane. The handle is nice, and the finish
on the body approaches 90% or more. The wood is good and the SW logo on the
skate is clear and strong. The skate is not pitted. Included is the
outside fence. It is missing the second bullnose front, and there is no Fillister
bed. There are two different depth stops, one being the heavy cast one up
front and the rear one is the steel version. The slitter is present.
There are no cutters. A great piece to add to the collection.

#42 Type 4 Millers Patent Plow Plane
The Stanley #42 Combination Plow and Fillister plane is one of the most graphically
good looking and sought after of all manufactured woodworking planes that was ever
produced. First introduced in 1870 this prime example exhibits traits that
indicate that it is a Type 3A or 4 and dates from about 1875 or 1876.
It is just slightly later than the other example of a #42 plane that I have listed
above. It is also in slightly nicer condition as evidenced by the very
nice original finish Rosewood long horn handle and lack of any appreciable pitting
or corrosion on the skate or fillister bed. The wrap around fence is
super and fits perfectly. All screws are nice and show just normal amounts
of wear. These beautiful and graphic planes with their gunmetal (bronze) bodies,
and superb looks and design are a testament to the craftsmanship and taste of our
early toolmakers and to those craftsmen who used them and the work that they turned
out. This is one of the nicer examples of this very beautiful and highly
desirable and collectible planes that I have ever had the pleasure to offer.
A winner that belongs on the top shelf of every serious tool collection.

Millers Patent #41 Plow Plane w/ Fillister Bed
Stanley's Millers
Patent line of Combination Plow and Fillister planes is one of the most graphic,
good looking, and sought after of all patented manufactured woodworking planes.
First introduced in 1870 this line of planes was offered by Stanley for less than
30 years before being phased out in favor of the more popular and versatile Stanley

This is a very nice #41 iron plow plane w/ fillister bed and both a straight and iron wrap around fence. These planes originally came with 9 cutters

for a fillister fence and so there are no slots for one in the skate. The
#44 is like a 42, but again has no provision for a fillister bed. This is a very nice
iron #43. The white residue on the handle is from the collectors
tag, and will come off with lighter fluid or the like with no effect. The condition is very nice with no pitting or rust.
The horn on the handle is good. It come with the 3 cutters shown.

#141 Millers Patent Bull Nose Plow Plane Stanley introduced the 141 line of Millers
Patent planes about 10 years after introducing the #41 which was phased out in
1897. The #141 was made up till the end of WWI in 1918. This is
basically the same as a #41 except that it has a provision for an
interchangeable nose piece, and it came with thinner cutters than the earlier
#41.
This #141 iron plow plane is an early japanned version. It is as
shown, and is missing the fillister bed. The second nose piece is also
missing, which it typical. There is just one cutter.
The collectors tag calls it off as a #143, but that is wrong as a #143 would not
have the provision to accept the missing fillister bed. What you see is
what you get.
