5 D. R. Barton / 1832 Gouges Very good overall condition gouges by one of the premier 19th century American tool makers. Fruitwood Handles. Largest 2" gouge has a tight handle crack that is stable. The rest are very nice. Largest gouge is 2" down to 1/2". Good user / workers.

Marples Limited Edition 6 pc. Rosewood Handle Chisel Set in Box   These vintage Marples chisels look to be of good quality. They are marked Sheffield England and the sizes are given in inches and meters. They come with a paper saying they are #117 of 500,  and a limited edition set offered by Woodsmith at some point. The collector received these as a gift and then never used them. As nice as one could ask for.

11 Buck Brothers Crank Neck Paring Chisels  This is a pretty nice set. The smallest is 1/8" the largest is a 2"  There is no slot for the 1 1/2 and the 5/8" is missing.   As found with shop made Mahogany holder. Ready to go back to work.

C. E. Jennings 12 Piece Set of Firmer Chisels   This exceptional set of firmer chisels buy a well known and respected maker are in super nice original condition. There are 12 chisels with the sizes being 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, 1, 1 1/4, 1 1/2, 1 3/4. and 2".  A few have seen minimal use. The 2 inch has never been hit. All have been honed by the previous owner. The condition of all is crisp and clean with no rust or pitting. The edges of s few of the smaller ones that were used have tiny flaking on the edge from use and just need to be re-honed. The box is original and shows some wear but is sound. The labels on inside indicating the sizes are 95% plus as is the purple background. This set of chisels has seen little or no use, and will be a fine set for use or the collection.

11 Peck Stow & Wilcox P. S. & W. Firmer Chisels Boxed Set  These well made quality chisels are in their original box. There is a label on the outside that is mostly unreadable, and another on the inside that is. The box has some chips and loose joints. Most of the chisels look to have never been struck. All are in fine condition. A couple are stained and the handle show wear. Those 2 are not pitted or damaged. One chisel is missing. The rest are a matched graduated set from 1/8" to 2". Nice.

6 Pexto Flat Firmer Chisels This is a nice matched set that seems to be missing one. The box is probably homemade and  made to hold 7 but there are only 6 left. Probably loaned one to the neighbor, or the bad kid left it out in the yard. Most of the handles look original, and one looks to be a replacement.

8 Robert Sorby Lathe Turning Tools, Chisels / Gouges Clean and sharp. These 8 lathe tools saw little use and are in fine condition. Some of the brass ferrules have split, but other than that show little if any signs of use. Good user / workers.

4 Ward & Payne Sheffield England Firmer Chisels  These are NOS in their original boxes and a finely made set. Each appears to be unused. There is a 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1".   These came from a shop that restored English sports cars. As nice as one could ask for.

11 Pc. Set of Witherby Firmer Chisels / Original Box   These chisels are nice. The handles on some are replacements and some need to be fitted a little better. Most of the chisels are original to the box and are a matched set and were bought from Iron Horse auctions back in the early 80's. Most have their original grind, and other than some ever so minor staining there are no problems with the steel.    The largest is a 2" and graduates down to 1/4" with the 1 1/4" missing. Note two of them are bevel edge and the rest are flat models.   Very Nice!

6 Marples Gouge Set The fellow who owned these liked Marples and Taylor edge tools. He had others, but you could tell he preferred these. This set is nice and shows little sign of use. The largest is 1" and they graduate down.

10 Marples Bevel Edge Bench Chisels This is a very nice set of Marples bevel edge chisels that looks to have seen little use. The largest is a 2" then 1 1/2, 1 1/4, 1, 3/4  5/8, 1/2, 3/8, 1/4, 1/8. Each has a etch with the name, England as the location, and the size in inches and metric on the blades. The handles are branded with the name Marples.  Each chisel is individually pictured in the links below. Take a look.

12 Buck Brothers Firmer Chisels  These chisels are an assemblage that was carefully done. There is a mixture of socket and tang style.   Overall they are very nice and will make a great user set.  The largest is a 2" and graduates down to 1/4"   Very Nice!

Pc. Set of James Swan Firmer Chisels / Original Box    These chisels are nice. The handles on some need to be fitted a little better, and some are obvious replacements, but the chisels I believe are original to the box and are a matched set. Millers Falls # 2 Carving Set - 6 Rosewood Handle Chisels v& Gouges in Original Box  Nice as they come w/ some minor staining / pits from storage! The label is not attached to the box or lid.

3 Addis Carving Tools  Overall condition is very good. One is stamped just ADDIS, and the other 2 S. J. Addis London. A 1/2" spoon gouge, and a 1/4 front bent chisel / gouge. & a 1/16" veiner. Tight cracks in the Walnut? Handles. Nice!!

5 German Made Carving Tools / Chisels / Gouges The top two are German-made DASTRA (David Strasmann) wood carving chisels. The company was founded in 1835 in Wuppertal-Ronsdorf, Germany.

The chisels are known for being high quality, hand-forged from high carbon tool steel tempered to a Rockwell hardness of 60-61. The labels on the handles commemorate "150 Jahre" (150 years) of the company.

The next two are Hirsch Werkzeuge V Shape Parting Chisels / Carving Tools / Gouges with full labels. The bottom one is also a parting tool with no ID other than a # 41 number stamp. I think it is another Dastra.

Riverside Tool Co. 3" Slick / Chisel w/ Anvil Logo This slick is marked with an anvil as the logo and the word Warranted below and Trade Mark to either side.

There was not a lot of hard info on this tool maker online. I found reference to that logo being Riverside Tools or being a distributor / house brand made by Riverside Tool Co. I found lots of speculation and guesses about it. I have seen / had other tools w/ this logo so their edge tools do turn up.

Some minor spots of of light pitting on the back side and the handles knob was cut off the otherwise nice handle.

Corner chisels were specialized heavy-duty tools primarily used in primarily in timber framing barn building and log home construction. Their purpose was to square up the rounded corners of a mortise cut into a heavy wooden beam so that a tenon could fit inside.

Wilder 7/8" Corner Chisel   Heavy duty timber framers barn building tool. Wilder is the only name I see stamped anywhere. Well made & nice.

Short side story. I still remember, and I am 70 now, and this was many, many, many years ago, showing him, and trying to sell him, a rare folding handle shave. For something like $100 or close to that. He passed. I sold it to Martin Donnelly an hour later for $150.00.

Later, I heard he sold it to Tom Lamond the next day for something like $500.00. That was 30 or 40 years ago.

Kind of similar to Martin today selling "Founders Grade Tools" for 5 to 10 times what anyone else can sell the same tool for. (WTF) And it just keeps happening. (UFB) Must be nice.

8 Hagen Patent Gun Stock Makers Tools / Broach   R. A. Hagen was granted a patent for his unusual cutting tool design in 1950. The patent # is 2534816 and it comes up easily with a Google search. Each of the 8 different sizes shown is marked with the name and patent number. They look to have never been used. In the patent he claims they are Gun Barrel Broaches or tools for fitting barrels to gunstocks. He notes that they could be used in other trades as well. Note the wheel design of the three on the left. The idea was you could set it up to cut when pushing, or pulling, and one could rotate the wheel to reveal a new sharp cutting area as needed.The others have cutters that can be removed and changed out or sharpened as needed. Humphrey Tool Co. 1882 Patent Cavity Plane / Spoke Shave This unusual spoke shave was made by the Humphrey Too Co of Warren, Mass. Faintly marked on the top of the body along the sides of the opening  This patent was by Frank Humphrey on May 16, 1882 #257875. He called it a cavity plane

These shave are unique because either or both wood handles unscrew from the body of the shave. Either handle screw in to tighten the cutter in place or one can be removed for in close tight work. This shave is about 11" long from tip to tip. The cutter is 2"

Preston No 1393 S Patent Reeder / Reeding Tool / Plane   A scarce patented reeding tool / plane by Preston. Preston is a well known and well respected English maker of edge tools. There is just one cutter, but profiles of your choice can be cut / made from hacksaw blades.

Spoke Shave Overall good useable condition. The cutter is unmarked. Examples of this shave can be found by different makers or distributors. Birmingham and Union being the too most recognized. Stearns Flex Bottom Spoke Shave  This is an unusual design for a spoke shave. It has a flexible steel plate in the back. It is a hard to find shave from the king of the shave makers Sterns. They must have had 20-30 different forms shapes and sizes, and this is the most unusual.

Stair Makers Handrail Shave  This piece is unmarked as to maker but it is very nicely done. The body is cast brass and the cutters well made and sharp. I assume it would be used for the final scraping of stair rail from the shape and form.

Record 151 & 151R Spoke Shaves  These are knockoffs of the Stanley 151 and 151 R  Radius - round bottom spoke shave. They look to have never been used. They are made of malleable steels, so should be able to withstand a fall or two.   The Stanley Version of the radius bottom one can bring more than the pair of these.    Nice.

Odd Spoke Shave   I could not find this shave in the spoke shave book. It might be there, but - - - - - I see no maker marks. It is an interesting design with the tabs and heavy cast blade holder. The condition is nice, noting the collectors trademark coat of lacquer.

Windsor Beader  This is the later improved model patented in 1885. Nice overall condition.

Windsor Beader  This version of the Windsor Beadier is the last model produced and harder to find than the models above. The condition is superb. Having never seen one in an original box, I do not know what to make of this one, but there is a halo of sorts on the top where a label might have once been. There are 3 double ended cutters included. The nickel on one side of the head is near mint, and shows some wear on the other. The handles are minty nice.

2 Windsor Patent Beaders  Windsor beading planes were patented by two fellows from Windsor Conn. Mr. Orlando Williams, and Lawrence Poole. They were issued 2 patents in 1885 for this design and that information is clearly stamped into the ebonized frame of the top.  This style is usually referred to as the second model of these beaders. Note that each has a different cutter. There is only one profile of each cut and there are 4 relatively large bead profiles on one and 6 finer profiles on the other .

Windsor Patent Scratch Beader / Beading Plane / Shave Windsor beading planes were patented by two fellows from Windsor Conn. Mr. Orlando Williams, and Lawrence Poole. They were issued 2 patents in 1885 for this design beading plane. They can be found with different cutters, and there is a later different design beader by them as well.

This example is in great condition, and has a cutter w/ 6 profiles including a couple beads / reeds. As can be seen it has a built in fence, and the head w/ the cutter can slide left to right. A great looking tool.

2 Folding Handle Drawknives  The top one with the chamfer guides included is an 8" C. E. Jennings, who was a respected and well known maker of edge and other tools back near the turn of the century.

On top is an 8" Oak Leaf from Simmons Hardware. I think it was made for them by Wilkinson. It is nice.

On the bottom is a pretty hard to find "Perfect Handle" by H. D. Smith Drawknife. The handles on this are bent up. I do not know if this was factory, or modified by the owner to keep from scuffing his knuckles. It seems to be a better idea and look good.

James Swan Folding Handle Draw Knife   Overall nice condition. Handles have unusual 2 way adjustment feature. In addition to folding in and out, they can also revolve. Kind of a unique idea. Maker stamp, size and Patent info stamped on blade. Well used with plenty of life left in it.

H. D. Smith "Perfect Handle" Drawknife  I am not sure the handle angle on this draw knife is original, or how an owner could have accomplished it, but it sure gives the user a new or different way to go about the working a drawknife. "Colonial" Schwabacher Hardware Double Bit Axe - Embossed Bell w/ "Rings for Quality" Slogan An unusual embossed double bit axe in good condition. It is also marked 4 for the weight, and on the back W O. I read it is from Schwabacher Hardware who was based in Seattle Washington. There was little other info to be found online.

Case's Tested XX Camp Hatchet / Axe This sale is for the Case's Tested XX Hatchet that is in fine overall condition pictured.  It dates from the 1930s.

The wood handle is very nice. The original leather sheath and its stitching is good. There are a couple of minor spots of oxidation on the otherwise bright shiny mirror like finish of the hatchet head. Poll end is good, and the blade end is pretty nice as well.

Shows little sign of use and no abuse. It is in fine condition and could be detailed out to be near mint.

Turpentine Axe  These unusual crescent shaped axes were designed to cut a slash into the bark of trees so they would ooze sap for the making of turpentine. The stamp says it us US made.

Jaks - Pen - Nife This unusual leather or wood cutting edge tool with numerous blades or cutters was offered by a fellow named Jack Klempner who hailed from Lakewood Ca. The instructions are marked 1982. Many of the cutters look unused. It looks like a great tool and somewhat more robust than most Xacto knives. There are instructions and a leather strop for sharpening.

Folding Blade Race Knife   This is a super piece, in super condition. Note the file work and chamfered edges. The second folding blade is an unusual feature. The mark says George Grau Barman, or Darmen. Not much turned up about him or the firm with a Google Search. These were used to mark lumber with things like ID marks, or I have been told for such things as marking the water line on a hull in boatbuilding.

Lion Machine Co. No. 4 Universal Trimmer Very nice. Proper original handle. Cutters are sharp and damage free. Over the years these trimmers were made and sold by several different companies. This is an earlier version with the patent info and Bridgeport CT location info cast into the body. It was such a popular tool that several companies are still offering clones.
