Frictionless Metal Advertising Levels by L. S. Starrett  These small Frictionless Metal advertising levels made by Starrett are pretty rare. One top plate is clearly marked Starrett, the other was marked but has mostly worn away.  Both have a very fine etched inscription on the side saying compliments of Frictionless Metal.

For the uninitiated, Frictionless Metal made Babbitt bearing metal, a lead / nickel metal alloy for pouring babbitt bearings in old machinery.Look for the ingots of Frictionless Metal Babbitt I have listed elsewhere, as well as other Frictionless Metal advertising pieces I have.

Springfield Level & Tool Co. 12" Cast Iron Level  A very nice 12" cast iron level by an obscure early MA based level maker. Good vials. No damage, original finish. Marked on side of main vial holder.

Standard Tool Co. 12" Cast Iron Machinist Bench Level Very nice overall condition. All 3 bubbles are good. Lots of original japanning. No damage or issues.

The Standard Tool Co. was created in the 1880s and gone by 1905. There is a history about this obscure and seldom seen Athol Ma. level maker in Rosebrook's book on American levels and makers.

This example is unmarked as far as I see. The diamond shape cutouts are distinctive. It has an unusual main vial adjustment feature. The vial is housed in a separate cast iron keeper that is adjustable. Rosebrook's book describes its function and design better than I can.

C. F. Richardson Survey Level Scope w/ Extra Level, Tripod & Box    An unusual piece by a relatively obscure level and tool maker that was ultimately bought out by Goodell Pratt and Starrett.  It is in very nice condition and dates from the late 1800s.

The box is original and OK.  There are two of the special design 10" levels w/ cast in mounting points, and one 12" nickel plated scope that attaches to the top.  The levels and scope are in fine condition.   It will make for a nice display piece in a number of settings or would be perfect for re-enactments or things of that sort!!  Graphic & Nice!!

Davis & Cook 24 Inch Cast Iron Level A nice looking and hard to find cast iron frame level. Commonly called the Pinwheel or Pretzel for the cast filigree design. Marked with the company name, location and patent info on the vial frames.  Some loss of finish, but no cracks, chips, breaks, or damage. Nice enough.

Davis Level & Tool Co, 18 Inch Cast Iron Level   Marked with Davis Level & Tool Co. name and Springfield Mass. location on one side plate, and with the name H. R. Dunbar instead of the typical patent dates on the other.  Not sure how or why that came to be.  Original paint. No cracks, chips, breaks, or damage. Nice.

Fitchburg - Webb Patent 6" Cast Iron Level  An unusual and hard to find 6" cast iron level.   Stamped with patent Dec. 7, 1886 info on the top rail.  Most of these levels that are found are unmarked and for a long time were hard to identify.  No issues. No cracks, chips, breaks, or damage. Super nice condition.

Fitchburg - Webb Patent 9" Cast Iron Level  An unusual and hard to find small cast iron level.  Most of these levels that are found are unmarked and for a long time were hard to identify. Based on the Webb patent granted Dec. 7, 1886.  Period advertisements provided the answer.  No issues. No cracks, chips, breaks, or damage.  Super nice condition.

C. E. Jennings 12" Cast Iron Machinist Level  A very nice 12" cast iron level.  Good vials.  This one has mounted vial tubes unlike the 12" Jennings above with cast holders.  No damage, original finish.

Williamsburg Mfg. Co. 12 Inch Cast Iron Machinist Level  A beautiful level. Nice. Marked with company name Williamsburg Mfg. Co. and Williamsburg Mass. location on main vial. Very light rust that will easily clean. While 2 tails in the filigree looks short, the tips are japanned indicating that is the way it left the factory. No other cracks, chips, breaks, or damage. Very Nice.

C. F. Richardson Athol Mass 6 Inch Cast Iron Level  Very nice overall condition. Stamp is in the top rail.   No issues, no apologies.  Richardson was the forerunner to Starrett.  There are history write-ups available and it is an interesting read.

Whitticase Inclinometer Level   Here is an interesting and seldom seen inclinometer level.  It is English and dates from the 1950s or so.  It is made of Aluminum and is 9" long.  To adjust the instructions simply state the user is to push on the center tapered portion w/ vial till it loosens and then turn to adjust.   There are no screws, locks or the like, just friction  It is a precision fit.  Took me a while to figure out, but there is one pictured on the internet with its instructions, beyond that not much more.  Different & Nice!!

Rollis 7 Inch Patented Dec 22 1896 Steel I Beam Level  Very nice overall condition. The patent was granted to a W. M.  Morton of New Haven CT. on December 22 1896.  The number is 573682A.  It comes up with a Google search.  The patent is based on the steel I beam design with adjustable brass level vials.  It was produced by the Rollis Hardware Co. of NY.  There are few other examples or info to be found.

6" Cast Iron Machinist Level  This small cast iron level has the same pattern as the Williamsburg above but is unmarked.  It could be by several makers.  Very Nice!!

Standard Tool Co. Athol Mass 6 Inch Pitch Level  On one end is a sliding bar w/ V groove that one could adjust to find the pitch of piping or other.  An unusual feature on a 6" level.  No cracks, chips, breaks, or damage.  No issues. Nice overall condition noting some finish loss.

Springfield Level & Tool Co. 6" Cast Iron Machinist Level  A nice 6" cast iron level by a little known and seldom seen maker.   Good vials.  No cracks, chips, breaks, or damage.  In his book on New England Levels and their makers Don Rosebrook has a history of who made what, for who, and when that sorts out the whys of all these similar looking machinist levels.

Millers Falls 6" Cast Iron Machinist Level  Little finish remains.  No cracks, chips, breaks, or damage.

Warren Knight No. 203 Clinometer / Inclinometer - Cast Iron Level  Nice condition.  Both vials are good.  The arm locks in at any angle desired.    A nice example of a hard to find tool.

Chapin Stephens Vogel Patent 24" Aluminum Level   An odd ball level dating from the teens / twenties using aluminum before its use making tools had become widespread.  Stanley made a version of this level based on Vogel's patents after they bought out Chapin-Stephens. Versions can be found marked just Vogel, Chapin Stevens, and Stanley.  All versions are hard to find especially in this nice condition.  This one is marked with 4 different dates from the teens / twenties. (see last pic)

Cast Iron Mystery Plumb & Level  Obviously manufactured, but by who?  It is just under 10" long and stands 5" tall.  Much taller than one would think or expect.  Not marked anywhere.  You can still see the milling marks on the 1 1/2 wide rails.  Both bubbles are good.  Very nice and different for sure!!

Bede Patent Mining Level    This is a nice level, noting the bulb is missing.  As if it was never there.  I have heard that most are found this way without the light hooked up and that they are assembled afterward to make them right.

Davis & Cook 12" Cast Iron "Pin Wheel" Level    This is a rare design for a metal level. The came in several sizes and also aluminum I believe.

Davis & Cook 24" Aluminum Level  This unusual level is in very nice condition.  The rings around the adjustable vials have all the important info giving the Manufacturer as Davis & Cook of Watertown N.Y. and the Patent date of Oct 20th 1903.  This was one of the first tools or levels that was produced from Aluminum and is quite unusual for this and it's unique design and decorative finish.  Seldom seen and rarely offered for sale, it is a good one!

Stratton Brothers 6" Machinist Level This is a rare example of a very hard to find level that Stratton Brothers produced during their heyday in the late 19th century.  The bubble is good and appear to be original.  There is some nickel loss as can be seen in the Pic, but the design is still sharp and nice.  Only the 3rd one I have ever seen.

Wm. T. Nicholson 1860 Patent #13 Cast Iron Level This level is in nice condition and although it shows considerable wear and loss of finish it is none the less a hard level to find. With a careful cleaning it will be ready to take its place with the rest of your rare Stanley pieces.  The main vial may have been replaced and the plumb is good and original.  This style level has a peep hole in the base for overhead work.

Keen Kutter KK # K624 Cast Iron 24" Level Cast iron levels by Keen Kutter are very difficult to find, and to find one in this condition is even harder.  Nearly all the black japanning is present.  There is no rust or pitting, and even the nickel on the vials is very nice.  There are no casting problems, chips or cracks.  It is just a well-made level in super condition from a very collectible maker.

Williamsburg Mfg. Co. 24 Inch Cast Iron Level  A nice looking level.  Marked with company name Williamsburg Mfg. Co. and Williamsburg Mass. location on main vial.   No cracks, chips, breaks, or damage.  One section over painted red as an ID I imagine.  Nice.

"Frictionless" Patented Cast Iron Advertising Level by Starrett   This unusual nickel plated pocket level was most likely an advertising giveaway from the Frictionless Metal Co of Chattanooga TN. or Richmond VA.  It is under 3" long and has a good bubble.  The overall condition is good with just minor loss to the nickel.  It is marked on the top plate Starrett, and the bottom is marked "Frictionless along with Patented on the top left.   Different & Unusual.

The Ridgely Springfield Ohio Plumb & Level  Ridgely is best known for their line of wall paper tools. I saw an ad with this style level claiming it could be used with any straight edge.  A hard to find level in nice overall condition.

Sherman Cast Iron Pocket / Square Level  This level is made to attach to a square blade or be used as is.  It is in nice condition.  The vial is original and the name and location can clearly be seen under the glass.

4 Inch Cast Iron Pedestal Machinist Level  No maker marks.   An interesting and unusual design.  No cracks, chips, breaks, or damage.  Note the milling marks are still visible on the base.  Nice.

Precision Brass Bodied Machinist Level   A nicely made brass body precision level in its tin case. There is a maker mark / logo on the bottom of a crown with an arrow through it and the letters E - G on the sides.   An interesting instrument.

Goodell Pratt 12" Cast Iron Nickel Plated Bench Level in Original Box  This is a very well made level and is in super overall condition.  Other than some minor corrosion and nickel loss to the upper bar is is very nice.  Another level not seen very often, and ready for the job or the shelf.  Nice.
