J.
R. Wood Lafayette Ind. Ivory Tipped Plow Plane The
stamp on the nose is probably an owner stamp given the position /
orientation. Plus the fact that he is not listed in Elliots book, and Google
does not recognize him.
Two tips have gone missing. The top of the tote has
a brass piece that might be original or is an early and interesting repair.
At a minimum, it has been on there a long long time. Pretty nice all
in all.

Rosewood and Boxwood
Handled Plow Plane
Another wonderful example of a rare American plow plane. This unmarked Rosewood
plow plane is in exceptional overall condition. The plane body is damage
or crack free. The contrasting colors of the
Boxwood wedge, rods, and nuts in contrast with the Rosewood body are wonderful. The fence is made of a
third color dense hardwood that may be just a lighter rosewood. It is very nice.
There is one age check in one of the nuts and the end of one rod is a
bit chewed up. The
threads are very nice. The
skate and other metal parts are all nice and rust or pit free. A very nice
plane that deserves to be proudly displayed!!

"A.
C. Bartlett Ohio Planes" by Sandusky # 119 Beech Plow Plane
This Beech plow is in very nice condition. It is not marked Sandusky but was made by them. The nose has a weak A. C. Bartlett / Ohio
Planes stamp which is known and typical. It is the style Sandusky made with a form fitted handle for right handers. I am left handed. Kind of discriminatory and short sighted
if you think about it. Don't believe they made one for lefties. Nice!! Good + . . . . . $75.00

Sandusky Center Wheel "Self Regulating" Handled Boxwood Plow Plane
A nice example of a rare form of American plow plane. This great plow plane was one of the collectors favorites and he made a
special tag for it. I guess the term center wheel plow was not in use then as he identified this as a "Self Regulating" Sandusky.
Overall it is in super nice condition and the plane body has the warm shiny glow that 100 year old Boxwood exhibits. The rods are
nice, and the threads on the center rod are very nice. There is an age crack running through the handle that also shows in the body,
but it is tight, shows no sign of opening, looseness, or other problems. It is getting so that the only time these ever show up anymore are
at major tool auctions, and they have done nothing but go up in value over the last 20 years. Very Nice!!!
Fine +. . . . . . $5200.00
SOLD!!
Winsted
Plane Co. Rosewood and Boxwood
Handled Plow Plane
This Winsted Plane Co Rosewood plow plane is in very good overall condition.

the 1850's.
It is a beautiful American Rosewood plow plane with Boxwood arms & nuts. The plane body is damage
or crack free. The name stamp is clear and bold. The wedge is a bit chewed up
but OK. The
arm threads are nice. One boxwood nut has a tight crack. The
skate and other metal parts are nice and rust or pit free. A very nice
plane that deserves to be proudly displayed!!
Good +. . . . . . . $295.00

Ivory
Tipped Ebony Plow Plane
Unmarked. There is some minor damage to the threads and some fine age checks in the body.

were at one point capped. All in all a nice plane at a reasonable price.

Ebony
and Boxwood Handled Plow Plane
A wonderful example of a rare American plow plane. It is such a nice
piece, and so well done that is a wonder it is
unmarked as to maker. This unusual plow plane is in
exceptional condition and was another of the collectors favorites that he kept it in a special place.
The overall
condition is super nice and the
ebony plane body is damage or crack free. The contrasting colors of the
Boxwood rods and nuts are wonderful. There is some
minor chipping close in on the threads as can be seen in the pics. The
rest are very nice. The
skate and other metal parts are all nice and rust or pit free. The cutters
are not part of the price. Very Nice!!

Mathieson
15 1/4" Walnut Infill Plane Here is
a beautiful example of Scottish craftsmanship & workmanship. It is a tribute to
the beauty of the tools which were produced across the pond during an earlier period.
The condition of the walnut infill plane could not be any nicer. The
lever cap is clearly stamped Mathieson, and it has a very nice Ward cutter and chip
breaker in it. These super form and very heavy planes are wonderful to both
look at and to use. This example weighs in at nearly 10 pounds and if you
are looking for something heavy to push around the shop this one will fit the bill.
A Stanley Bedrock of approx the same length weighs in at under 7lbs. as a comparison.

Knowles
Type Patented Plane w/ Cut Out Sides
Hazard Knowles was granted a patent for an iron bodied plane in 1827. It
is considered the first patent for a metal bodied plane granted in America. No
known examples are marked. Shortly after other versions of metal bodied
planes based on the idea began to appear and are generally referred to as
Knowles types.
In Vol. II of Smiths works on patented planes he pictures a
plane identical to this one with the decorative cut-outs in the cast iron sides. He
calls it a Knowles type and provides some info based on how the cutter was
marked. Roger Smith covers the whole range of Knowles planes and Knowles type
planes and their history, in some detail, in both volumes of his books on patented
American planes. It is worth the read.
The overall condition of this 19" long plane is very nice with no damage to the
cast iron body. The throat area is nice. There are no markings or patent
info. There is little to no rust or
pitting. It has not been over cleaned or fiddled with. The infill

E.
W. Carpenter Patented Double Wedge Wooden Jointer Plane
This unusual patented design wooden jointer plane is in very nice
condition. The patent was granted to The famous PA planemaker E. W. Carpenter in 1849.
The patented double wedge feature
can be found on planes made by other PA makers as well as those like this one
made by Carpenter himself.
The stamp on the nose is very nice, and the overall condition of the plane is
nice. With a light clean it will be a standout example for the collection
of early patented planes.
The idea was 2 fold in that as the sole wore down, the tapered rear wedge could be lowered to move
the cutter forward in relation to the throat opening. It could also be
adjusted to change the angle of the cutter. Kind of a neat idea
for a real issue in wood sole planes. Metal bodied planes arrived on the
market shortly afterward and made the idea kind of irrelevant. Different & Interesting.

Coppers
4 Cutter Stave or Jointer Plane This is a very early and unusual coopers
plane. Typical ones have a long body, but usually only one cutter. This
one is set up with 4. From the looks of it this plane was designed to be used
from either end to perform different functions. Note the profile shot.
One end has square cutters and the other end has cutters with a hollow grind to
them. The tag that came with this stated it came from the Ken Roberts collection.
It was originally bought in the 70's by the collector here. Just a super plane

Large Wooden Barrel Makers Plane
This style of plane was for cutting the groove for
the top or bottom of a barrel or similar work like on carriages. It has a
set cutter width and a nicker for each side. It cuts about an inch wide groove

replacement. The wedge may be a replacement as well but looks
good. A large and graphic example that has been hanging from the rafters for
the last 20 some years. Nice.

J.
F. & G. M. Lindsey Huntington Mass Patented July 2 1878 Beech Jointer Plane
I spent several hours looking for the patent for this, I came up empty. The assumption is that
the patent date and initials behind the handle on this nice looking Beech
jointer plane are for the reinforcing rod that is running through the handle. The handles on these
types of planes are fragile and often found broken off, and this is an idea that seems plausible
and needed. This is the only example with this type of feature that I have ever
seen.
The condition is superb, and the mark on the front is 2 star
A1 mark from Tom Elliot's new revised edition of American Wooden Planes. My failure
to find the patent can be explained in a number of ways. It may be a bogus date put there to scare the competition away from stealing
the idea. Or it may have been the submission date and not the issue date. Or - - - In any case it is a situation that deserves further
research that I just do not have the time or inclination for right now. Super!!

Worrall Patent
Moving Fillister Multiform Molding Plane w/ Removable Handle
This is a
later example of a Worrall Patent
Multiform Molding
Planes that can be found. It has a beautiful removable Tiger Maple handle
on it. The collectors tag indicates this was as it was presented
when bought years ago at auction.
Take note of how this planes body
originally was manufactured with two slots in the top of the plane to receive a
different style handle. The foreword slot has been factory filled so that this style handle
with a single attachment point could be used. At one point Worrall
produced a style handle with a long metal base that was attached at two points, but he
dropped that idea in favor of this simpler design that was easier and cheaper to
produce. Roger Smith
discusses this situation in his 1st book, and illustrates a similar fillister plane with
the other style handle that used both slots.
The
condition is very nice overall, but the wedge while almost right does not seem
to fit just right and needs to be modified a bit to fit better. Different, early and nice!!Good . . . . . . . $225.00 SOLD!!
10 Worrall Patent
Multiform Molding Planes w/ 1857 Patent Removable Handle
Offered here is a grouping of 10 Worrall
Patent
Multiform Molding
Planes. The wide molder on the right has an example of what I
believe is one of Worrall's later patents, # 18,312 granted in 1857 which covers the
design of the handle shown on the right with an adjustable cast iron base.
The
pics give an individual shot of each of the bodies. The first on the left w/ the
vertical wedge is missing its cutter. The large wide profile body on the
right with the
mounted handle is missing its wedge. Take note of pics 27 & 28 as this
body is a bit different in the way it is cut, and how it uses a second cutter as
a sort of chip breaker. Kind of different. The overall condition is very nice. The
removable handle w/ adjustable cast iron base is especially
nice. Different, early and nice!!Good . . . . . . . $375.00 / Lot SOLD!!
"C
E Chelor - Living in Wrentham" Hollow Molding Plane This
18th century molding plane was made by Cesar Chelor the former slave of
Francis Nicholson who was America's first documented
wooden plane maker. C. E. Chelor began his career as Nicholson's
apprentice, but upon Nicholson's death Cesar Chelor was willed his freedom, tools, and more. There is
a nice history of the parties involved and how things evolved at
https://www.antiquetools.com/chelor/index.html
The plane is in excellent condition
and has a beautiful form and patina. It is made of yellow birch it
has its original wedge and nice heavy chamfers. The name stamp and Living
in Wrentham location is clear and bold. There are a couple of minor chips that are insignificant.
Real Americana and a piece of African and American history at its best. Good +. . . . . $2295.00

6 Worrall Patent
Multiform Molding Planes (Beads) w/ Removable Rosewood Handle
Offered here is a nice grouping of
6 Worrall Patent

3/8NWC - 3/8 - 4/8 - 5/8 - 8/8.
The removable handle is Rosewood and stamped with
Worrall's original patent date
from 1854. Of all the examples shown in both of Smiths books, there are no
examples of handles made of Rosewood with the attached brass piece that this one has.A
much improved design for the tightening screw from some of his other work. Different, early and nice!!

Crown Molding Plane This crown molder appears to be unmarked.
It measures 4 1/2" from the inside of the fence to the edge of the plane.

Crown molders are becoming hard to find and this one is a pretty nice example.

Tower of Sudbury Mass. Complex Molding Planes According to the newest version of American
Wooden Planes by Emil and Martyl Pollak, & newly edited by Thomas Elliot, John
Tower was born in 1758 and worked in Sudbury Mass north of Worchester in the early
1800's. He died in 1846. There is an anecdotal story about him being
a bit touched in his later years, but the fellow who made these was obviously a craftsman near his peak as they are superb
examples of craftsmanship and form. All aspects of these two planes are near
flawless and the wedges and heavy chamfers have that special feel of age and quality.
Super condition, and very nice profiles about says it all for these 2
superior molding planes. Rare

Table Leaf Joint Plane by M. & N.
H. Stout of St. Louis. This is a difficult maker to find,
as are any planes from west of the Miss. Their working dates were from 1838-49
and were hardware dealers in St. Louis after that. This one has an unusual
cut which looks like a table joint to me. It is uncleaned, but will look great
with just a light cleaning, but I will leave that to your tastes. The makers
mark is clear and strong and the cutter and wedge are nice.

D. Amsden Tongue Plane
This plane is made of beech.. Everything is here and as can be seen

B. Frogatt
This molding plane is 9 3/4" long. The makers mark is not listed in Pollack's
last book, and so it may be English. It has those characteristics that could
make it either American, or English. It appears to be made of Beech, but the
wedge profile and the extra 1/4" in length give one pause. It has a complex
stepped profile that is not very deep. All in all a nice example.
