Patent
Larrison / Leigh Combination Bevel / Level w/ Graduated Brass Blade I
have
never had or seen this unusual patented combination bevel / level before. I found one reference
in a price guide to
a damaged one selling for close to 1000 in a well known tool auction a few
years back. There was no maker info or anything else
listed in the description. Just that it was unusual.
The condition of this example is exceptional. The only similar
combination bevel / square I could find for this date is different
in some aspects, and correct in others. I believe it is the correct
patent and that they modified it to be easier to make and use. The
patent number is
160106 and it was granted to a J. L. Larrison, and H. Leigh
who lived in NY and PA pretty close to each other. Very unusual!!

Double Blade Bevel W/ Diamond Pattern Brass Body
The patent for this design bevel was granted on June 14 1870

Calhoon Patent Square / Bevel Roofers Tool This unusual patented roofers square
/ bevel, w/ level hails from MO
and was patented in 1912. It was slightly over engineered and the idea
as presented
never really caught on in its day. I suppose that could be attributed
to a variety of reasons besides how complicated it seems, and how many
different scales there are. It is a hard to find and odd
piece.
Later the Swanson speed square was introduced using much of this
squares ideas but utilizing the KISS design criteria, it was "new, novel,
very popular, and .simple It was touted as a new and wonderful invention. It just
goes to show that there really are no new ideas. I'd be willing to bet
Swanson made a lot more money also.

The
Standard Take-Down Framing Square
The copperized finish on this framing
square was an upgrade option that Southington offered and not many people choose
as this is the first one that I have seen. It is simply marked "The Standard"
and is in excellent condition. The canvas case did its job, and is a bit tattered
looking. The 101 model according to the small pocket catalog that is included
also offered their patented rafter tables that their 100 model did not. Very

Kenny's Patent Marking Gauge Pat Jan 4th 1870
This interesting piece is unmarked, as they
all are, but it is a well known and very desirable patented tool from the 19th century.
Typically they have a Rosewood and Boxwood head, but this version has two boxwood
ones. As is often the case, these heads are both cracked, and one has been
glued. It is still operational and looks OK as is. The brass rod is
in super condition and has never been cleaned or abused. Ready as is to be
used, or with a simple restoration, this could be a highlight.

J.
D. Wilkinson 1887 Patent Quick Adjust Dividers
The condition is very nice. Good patina, good points, fully operable.
In use one would lift the spring loaded curved steel arm to disengage the
thumbscrew gear and allow the leg to quickly rough adjust,
then fine adjust with the thumbscrew engaged. A neat design.
The patent info is clearly
stamped into the brass body as can be seen in the pics. I recently bought this at
a PAST meeting where it changed hands twice before I traded for it later in
the day.
I had passed it over earlier because it was in a junk box and missed it. I have only seen one
other, and it is listed on my past sales site Antiqbuyer.com.
Google search
or its AI search could find no others. Google use to recognize it, as
when I last had one and wrote about it 10 -15 years ago there was some info out there. Times
have changed and so has Google search. See my listing for the other one on Antiqbuyer.com.
A short side story: I asked my new
friend, AL (Googles Gemini artificial intelligence) about it, and it was a fking disaster.
First it straight out lied and made shit up giving me an improper citation to an irrelevant patent.
When I corrected it, it then misidentified the patent holders name and again
came up with the wrong patent. When I pointed that out to it, it
congratulated me for being so smart.
It then referenced me to 3 different
antique tool websites that MIGHT have more info. None did. I
then pointed out to it that one was listed in the past sales archives at Antiqbuyer.com, and
asked why it did not find or use that info. Al came back with some BS about my
website was too specialized, and a retail site and felt those others, also
retail websites who pay for
links, I might add, seemed more blah blah blah bullshit.
The patent # is 364561 and the patent
still comes up using Google. A fine addition to the early
machinist tool collection.Good + . . . . . $125.00

Randall & Stickney Indicator /
Micrometer
This R & S Watchmakers Bench Top Dial Micrometer was patented Aug.
21, 1883 and made by Randal and Stickney of Waltham, Mass.It is in excellent condition.
It The dial reads in thousandths of an inch. These types of micrometers were mostly used by
factory workers as inspection tools for mass produced parts. The table can be adjusted up or down so items could be checked by setting the dial on zero with a control piece and allowing
the variance to be read on the test pieces. It is made of cast iron with nickel plated parts. It has the original
paint with gold pin striping and label. Part of the label decal is missing.
It measures about 7-3/4 inches tall and has a 4-1/4 inch base. It weighs about 4 lbs. It has serial number

219 Micrometer on Articulated Micrometer Stand
An unusual micrometer on an even more unusual design
articulated stand. The Starrett version of a micrometer stand is # 206.
This is simply marked on the stand "Made by H. R.
Simpson", the Machinist / makers name I assume.
Note that the # 219 Starrett micrometer has a blade like anvil. That
number must have been retired as there are no examples using a Google
search. Current day Starrett blade micrometers retail for approx.
$600. I read somewhere that this type of micrometer and stand are used
by ammunition reloaders. The ratchet feature works
fine and stops at 0. Different. Add it to the

Jaques
Patent Direct Read Micrometer This
unusual micrometer was made by the Central Tool Co, of Auburn RI. Its

patents for machinist tools and micrometers. See pic for dates.

desirable speed indicators that was produced during the later part of the 19th

interesting and graphic devices can be considered complete without the full
set of these in the middle. This example has a serial #of 866 stamped into the
bottom of the grip, and the Gutta-Percha grips are flawless as is the patent
info and inventors name that is engraved into them. The 4 Patent dates
range from 1889 thru 1894.On the other side is the inventors name Harvey
Hubbell. The nickel plating is 98% + and there will be no disappointments
with any aspect of the condition of this piece, truly a top shelf piece.

Brown & Barry Patented Marking / Mortise Gauge
The Brown & Berry 5 stem marking gauge is one of the rarest

for a marking gauge with 5 moveable stems. I imagine many potential users
could not handle the concept.
