Enterprise Double Wheel
Coffee Mills / Grinders

The

Enterprise
#3 Coffee Mill#3 Enterprise Coffee Mill  This very nice condition coffee mill was made by the most famous maker of cast iron grinders and other cast iron kitchenware, The Enterprise Manufacturing Co. of Philadelphia PA.. It is in very nice overall condition and is all original. The paint is good+ and just slightly faded as is often found. There are lots of decals remaining with good color. The wooden drawer with the #3 is proper and original right up to the mouse chew on the back wall. Seems they like coffee as well. We used this mill to grind our coffee for about a year. It works fine and grinds it as fine as one could want. I think though we are going to go back to the electric one from the appliance store. The wood base is nice and has a great patina. One size bigger than the #2 these mills stand 14" tall and the wheel diameter is 12

It is in very nice overall with bright colors and the paint being original, as are the decals. The base and drawer are original and nice. The decals on the body are original but somewhat worn and faded as can be expected.  There is a bit of coffee residue on the wheels and body as is often found, and we tend to leave them this way as it is true indication of the age and character of these fabulous devices from a time past. You can buy #2 grinders pretty regularly, but not this earlier smaller size referred to as the "baby". These models never had a top, and it is proper as shown.  This is an unusual opportunity to be able to buy one in this nice condition. Very Nice!!

Enterprise #2 Coffee Mill / GrinderEnterprise #2 Coffee Mill / Grinder   This #2 size coffee mill was made by Enterprise Manufacturing Co. of Philadelphia PA the most famous maker of cast iron coffee mills / grinders and other cast iron kitchenware.Number 2 size coffee mills stand just over 12 inches tall and have 9" diameter wheels. They are the perfect size for display in the country kitchen or other settings.

The patent for this design was first issued in the early 1870's but these mills were made and offered into the 1920's or so. This coffee mill was made into a lamp at one point. It is in very nice overall condition showing minimal wear to the paint and decals. It is not all faded or worn as many of these 100 year old grinders that were used a lot are. The decals are original and better than most. A couple of them do show wear, but overall they are very nice. The eagle on the top is a replacement to cover the hole from when it was a lamp. The internal grinding plates are present and it works just fine. The cast iron drawer with the porcelain knob is proper and original but has a hole drilled in the bottom, again from when it was a lamp. There are no other holes or modifications from when it was a lamp.   Nice!!

Enterprise
#1 Coffee MillEnterprise #1 Coffee Mill  This model is often referred to as Enterprise's first model coffee mill. It is marked  #1 in the casting below the hopper. These early versions never had a lid for the hopper and there is no provision for one, and so this is correct as presented.  There is no casting damage, and the guts are present and operational. The drawer front has been repainted, but the casting and overall condition is nice. The black portions of the paint appear to have been enhanced  in some areas on this mill at some point, but there is lots of original paint left, and even some of the gold highlights and stripping on the base.

Enterprise #2 Coffee Mill  This #2 size coffee mill was made by the most famous maker of cast iron grinders and other cast iron kitchenware, The Enterprise Manufacturing Co. of Philadelphia PA. It is in very nice overall condition and the paint is bright and decals are original and better than most. The base is a replacement that I refinished. The paint is good+ and just slightly faded as is often found. There are lots of decals remaining with good color. A couple of them do show wear, but overall they are very nice. The cast iron drawer with the porcelain knob is proper and original. This mill works fine and grinds, but there is a slight wobble to one wheel. There are no casting breaks or cracks in it, it is just a little off balance. Number 2 mills stand just over 12 inches tall and have 9" wheels.

Enterprise #2 Cast Iron  Coffee Mill / Grinder  This super original condition coffee grinder was made by the premier maker of such things, the Enterprise Manufacturing Co. of Philadelphia PA. It is in super condition overall with the bright colors and all paint being original, as are the decals which are nicer than almost ever seen. It appears to have been overcoated at one point with some sort of gloss, but this probably explains the exceptional condition, and is not a detraction or distraction. The base and drawer are original and nice. There is a small chip in the handle. The decals on the body are original and as nice as one could want noting some small amount of fading. There is a bit of coffee residue on the wheels and body as is often found, and we tend to leave them this way as it is true indication of the age and character of the fabulous devices from a time past. You can buy these grinders pretty regularly, but not in this condition, and it is an unusual opportunity to be able to buy one in the nice condition. Super!!

Coffee Mills / Grinders

The

Landers,
Frary, Clark #20 1/2 Cast Iron Coffee MillLanders, Frary, &Clark #20 1/2 Cast Iron Coffee Mill  This super condition coffee grinder is still sporting nearly 100% of its two-tone original Black and White finish. This famous and well respected company put out a well finished and highly detailed series of coffee mills and in their quest for market share with Enterprise and other makers of quality cast iron products back near the turn of the last century. They went the extra mile with details like ball bearing wheels and varying paint schemes to entice the buyer to purchase their version. This model has the extra bonus of the nickel plated hopper that is an exceedingly rare find in today's marketplace.  I have seen these in a number of different paint schemes and they really do stand out from the typical red that most Enterprises or Parker Mills came in. The internals are here as well, and it does a real nice job grinding coffee as well. A super coffee mill in rarely seen model and super condition to boot!!

National Specialty Mfg. Co Philadelphia #2 Size Coffee Mill / GrinderNational Specialty Mfg. Co. Philadelphia #2 Size Coffee Mill / Grinder   This #2 size coffee mill was made by National Specialty Manufacturing Co. of Philadelphia PA.  This make coffee mill is far rarer than similar size mills by other makers. It has two very distinctive features with the 8 sided shape of the casting for the body, and the grind adjuster being lever actuated and controlled by a thumbscrew in the body below the shaft on the side. Both of these features are a unique design.

This number 2 size National coffee mill stands just over 12 inches tall and has 9" diameter wheels. The overall condition is very nice. There is minimal wear to the decals or original paint on the body of the grinder. The front of the proper drawer was repainted and is a very good match.. It is a bit dirty from use, and I think looks better this way than cleaned with the resulting loss that almost always happens to the decals and gold highlights. It is the perfect size for display in the country kitchen or other settings and will make for a great addition to any collection. Nice!!

parker202.jpg (21654 bytes)Chas. Parker 202 Coffee Grinder  We started buying antique coffee grinders / mills a few years ago--- # 2's, wall-mounts, big ones, lap models, etc. and more by luck than by really knowing anything we managed to acquire and keep a few really nice ones. Back then Parkers were second rate and the rage was over Enterprise grinders. This Parker 202 struck us as being unusual in that it looked like a floor model grinder, or larger countertop model in design, but it is really the size of a No. 2 with just 8 1/2" wheels. Also the high-top sliding domed lid is a different design than commonly seen. We've heard there are only a couple known and we would be curious to hear if there are any others out there.

Good + . . . . .$1795.00         SOLD!

park_nick_hop1.jpg (19572 bytes)Chas. Parker Meriden Conn. # 250 Coffee Mill  It would be hard for anyone to find fault with the condition of this spectacular piece as it is simply superb. This coffee mill came to us here in California a few years ago at one of the few remaining shows that we bother going to anymore. It is the type of find that makes you drive 3 or more hours and spend lots of money on expenses even though you know in your heart that you will probably come home empty. We have a similar Enterprise grinder with a nickeled hopper, but it is much smaller and no where near as graphic or interesting as this one is. When we first started buying grinders, it seemed that Enterprise grinders were all the rage, and that they would bring far more than their off brand counterparts. That trend seems to have lessened, and now I think people have begun to realize that these Parkers and some others are far less common than the Enterprise models. In addition to coffee grinders / mills like this, Parker made a host of other cast iron products and hardware, as well as a superior line of firearms and they had a reputation for always putting forth a quality product. They certainly did not skimp or hold back on this piece.

Landers,
Frary & Clark #20 Coffee MillLanders, Frary & Clark #20 Cast Iron Coffee Mill  Landers, Frary & Clark is a well known name to coffee mill / grinder and kitchen antiques collectors. Their product line ranged from such things as eggbeaters to toasters and just about anything else kitchen or household related.

This antique coffee grinder is an example from their great line of cast iron and patented mechanical household devices and is one of the nicest made and well engineered example coffee mills any maker put out. It had to be to compete with the other big names like Charles Parker, Enterprise, National, E. C. Simmons or Keen Kutter and more.

This #2 size cast iron coffee grinder features a cast iron body and 8 1/2" Dia. wheels. It is mounted on the original wood base, and the drawer is original. The lid is good and that is the only area where there is any finish missing.. The grinding plates are present, and sharp. The fine adjust screw is here, and functions properly. The original paint is approx 95% or better and the decals for the most part bright, complete and much nicer than one would expect for a near 100 year old coffee mill.

One of LF&C upgraded features for their line of coffee mills is the unusual feature of ball bearings at the end of the main axle against the wheels to ensure near effortless operation. It was a nice gesture, very visible, and I am sure a great advertising and marketing feature. One might wonder though why the ball bearings or any bearing were not incorporated at the actual point where the most wear would occur, being where axle meets the body, but not to worry, there is no wear and this one runs tight and smooth with no wobble or looseness, and the ball bearings still look good. Marketing.

This coffee mill is in super condition and will make for a great display piece, or a good user. It really is true that ground as opposed to cut coffee has a different and better flavor. Try it!!

Good + . . . . .$1095.00         SOLD!

Landers, Frary & Clark #20 Cast Iron Coffee MillLanders, Frary & Clark #20 Cast Iron Coffee Mill  Landers, Frary & Clark mills came in a variety of color combinations. All are getting hard to find. Even harder is finding them in n8ice condition. They were a well made mill and got used.

The two tone paint is original paint is approx 80% or better and the decals for the most part bright, complete and much nicer than one would expect for a near 100 year old coffee mill. These two tone mills are much harder to find than the solid color ones.

This coffee mill is in nice condition and will make for a great display piece, or a good user. It really is true that ground as opposed to cut coffee has a different and better flavor. Try it!!

Chas. Parker #3000 Coffee GrinderChas. Parker #3000 Coffee Grinder  Parker Mills are much harder to find than either Enterprises or Lander Frary & Clark. They are a superior product, but I think Parker was more focused on their line of guns than the manufacture of nice Coffee Mills.   This one is in nice condition, complete, correct w/ a wooden drawer in this size, and grinds coffee like a charm.

Good + . . . . .$1295.00         SOLD!

riverside1.jpg (31204 bytes)The Riverside #7 Size Double Wheel Coffee Mill  This is a very rare coffee mill that is in super condition. McMillan barely makes mention of it in his exhaustive book on the subject of coffee mills, and there is not one pictured.  From the construction details it appears that Enterprise may have made it, but  the wheels, which measure about 17" in diameter, are a completely different casting. It is marked "Riverside Manufacturing Co. New York Trojan" in bold letters. It retains 90% or more of the deep red finish, and the paint on the wheels is dirty but still near perfect. This unusual coffee grinder is far rarer than any Enterprise or Parker coffee mill in the same size or configuration and it will be a long time before you will ever see another in anything close to as nice condition.

Good + . . . . $2495.00        SOLD!

The
Star Mill Coffee GrinderThe Star Mill Coffee Grinder   This unusual Coffee Mill / Grinder, "The Star Mill", is from Philadelphia and if far rarer than a comparable Enterprise coffee grinder. It is the size of a #7 mill and is the type that would sit on the end of the counter in a large General Store back near the turn of the century The condition of the paint on this grinder is wonderful, and the stars on the wheels are a great touch. The wheels measure 22" and the internal mechanism is intact and operational. The brass top hopper has some nickel loss and the lid needs to be soldered back on, but overall it still looks pretty good. Mills this size that have not been restored and are this nice with their original paint are becoming ever more difficult to find. In the right setting this will make a great addition to the decor or overall effect in that special setting.

Good + . . . . .$1295.00         SOLD!

Coles
#2 Size Coffee MillColes #2 Size Coffee Mill  These #2 size coffee grinders by makers other than Enterprise and L. F. & C. are becoming very difficult to find. This is a very early example and in all likelihood dates from the last quarter of the 1800s. The paint is pretty good with some areas showing chipping and loses, but overall it is very nice. The Coles name and the location of Phila. Pa. are cast into both of the wheels which measure 9 3/4" across. The paint and gold highlighting on these are very good. The decals are here, and may clean, but look worn. The one apology is a small chip out of one corner on the original cast iron drawer. The adjuster for determining the grind is present and operable. The wooden base is original and very nice as well. A nice example of a hard to find grinder.

Good + . . . . $395.00         SOLD!

Enterprise #9 Coffee Mill / GrindeEnterprise #9 Coffee Mill / Grinder   This is a nice looking #9 size Enterprise Coffee Mill. It has 20" dia wheels. The wooden drawer is proper and nice. The decals are in very nice condition. The orange / red paint is in excellent condition. There is one apology in that the top hopper has a tight hairline crack that runs from the top down about 2"  It is hardly noticeable and not in danger of going anywhere. It looks like it could almost be a factory flaw. A great display piece for the country / general store look.  Nice!!

Keen Kutter / Koffee Krusher
Coffee Mills / Grinders

The

Keen Kutter Simmons Hardware Koffee Krusher #12 Coffee Mill / GrinderKeen Kutter Simmons Hardware Koffee Krusher #12 Coffee Mill / Grinder   This is a very rare coffee mill. Very few of this brand coffee mills have ever come to market. One sold at the famous Simmons Auction Co. bi-annual THCKK specialty antique hardware store and advertising auction a few years ago that was the same size as this. That example brought $4000+ but I was not there to witness that and do not know what condition it was in or even what color it was. In any case blue is the rarest of colors for any coffee mill by any maker and especially so for this Keen Kutter model put out by Simmons Hardware in St Louis.

Simmons Hardware. Co., if you are not familiar with them or their style were more a distributor and marketer than actual producer of the products they sold---the hardware and housewares Wal-Mart of their day if you will. They were masters of their game in their time and were hugely successful in the midwest before spreading throughout the country marketing their wares. Most times they jobbed out the production of the wares to different high quality manufacturers and then applied their name and used their reputation and marketing skills to sell the product. That fact is interesting to note in this case, as different parts of this mill, and the others I have seen display characteristics of mills from more than one maker. As an example, the wheel layout and design are by Enterprise, but the ball bearing feature on the main shaft is a feature typically associated with Landers, Frary, and Clark, another famous producer of quality cast iron products during the 19th century. It seems as though they were contracting out the different parts of the mills to different companies and then assembling the machines themselves. Probably as a cost cutting measure to keep an individual company from charging them too much.

They did similar things with other products, first ordering it from one manufacturer and then switching to another, but always keeping the Simmons name and the double K logo for Keen Kutter. With coffee mills they changed that to Koffee Krusher. This mill is in very nice overall condition. Nice!!

Good + . . . . .$1650.00            SOLD!

koffee_krush2.jpg (27102 bytes)Simmons Hardware Co. St Louis MO Koffee Krusher #2 Size Coffee Mill   This is a super rare and in super condition vintage coffee grinder / mill that was produced for the Simmons Hardware Co. of St. Louis, MO near the turn of the last century. Their logo was a pair of KK's and the name Keen Kutter, thus explaining the name Koffee Krusher cast into the wheels of this coffee mill. Simmons Hdwe. Co. was a famous hardware store, and their line of products have become quite collectible, and the rare pieces that they produced bring respectable amounts these days. This piece is unusual, and unlike a lot of stuff that comes out of the Midwest it is in super condition. I remember the first one of these I saw go on the internet a few years back. The seller did not know what the initials meant and never mentioned the name Keen Kutter or Simmons in the ad. There was next to no bidding and as I waited for the clock to run down my computer disconnected and I missed the chance to bid. It sold for a pittance.

The advertisement that I have seen for this grinder shows it without a lid, and I think we can safely assume that the one that is on it now was the last owners solution to the spiders and other critters of the night taking up residence after the lights were turned out. Rare!!

Coffee Mills / Grinders

The

New Model Patented 1886 Coffee Grinder"New Model" Patented 1886 Coffee Grinder  This cast iron open frame coffee mill was manufactured by New Union Manufacturing Company of Freeport, Illinois.  Freeport was also home to another famous coffee grinder maker Arcade. The grinder is marked "New Model" in a curve on the cast iron base and "PTD. July 20 '86" inside the cast iron hopper. The patent was obtained by Edward and Charles Morgan.

According to "The Macmillan Index of Antique Coffee Mills" the general design, with wooden-faced metal drawer and the open housing of the drawer, made the mill near unique and it is a quite hard model to find.

This antique cast iron coffee grinder is in great condition, totally functional with no breaks or repairs. Minimal wear or tear and lots of original finish remains. Wooden base and drawer are original, as is the crank knob. A rare coffee mill that would compliment any antique coffee mill collection, primitive kitchen setting or a neat addition to a old country store display.

Erie
Lap Mill Style Cast Iron Coffee GrinderErie Lap Mill Style Cast Iron Coffee Grinder  The condition of the rare and desirable coffee mill is second to none. In addition to the Erie cast into the lid, this one also has the name and location of a famous early Hardware company that was in Syracuse New York back during the late 19th century. That name was Hessler. We have had and seen the Grand Union version of this grinder numerous times, and have owned the version marked Griswold a couple times, but this is the first time we have seen this variation, and have never seen a nicer condition example in any configuration. A rare and desirable piece by any measure.

Vintage Cast Iron Top Lap Coffee MillVintage Cast Iron Top Wooden "Lap" / Coffee Mill   There are many different version of this style "lap" coffee mill. Most are not marked as to name. They could be used on the countertop, and that is where they display well, but they are known as lap mills as i imagine a lot of coffee was ground while the operator sat down with this in his lap.   Some had decals or paper labels that over the years fell off or were worn away. I see no name on this one, or remnants of any labels. It is a real and early one unlike some of the ones you can find today.

It is well constructed and damage free. It does look to have been refinished at some point in time.

Vintage English Cast Iron Kenrick Coffee MillKenrick Cast Iron Coffee Mill   There are several different sizes and versions of this style "lap" coffee mill. "Crown No. 2 " Handheld Coffee Grinder / Mill"Crown No. 2 " Handheld Coffee Grinder / Mill  This is an odd & unusual coffee mill. I believe it is by LANDERS, FRARY & CLARK. It is marked "No. 2 Crown Coffee Mill". It is not marked Landers Fray & Clark, but the fill lid is marked No. 2 Crown Coffee Mill, and the Crown decal is similar to those used by L. F. & C. on their other style coffee mills. The bottom of the catch cup is marked Made in USA.

I have had and sold many many coffee grinders over the years and have never seen or had this handheld version before. It is a bit awkward to use, trying to hold it steady and turn the crank at the same time. I can imagine it was not a good seller compared to wall mount or countertop model mills or grinders one typically sees.

It is in overall nice cosmetic condition with a lot of original finishes. The grinder aspect works. The cast iron handle is good. There are some small dents, and insignificant scratches, but nothing major.

It does have an apology. The threads on the bottom for the catch cup are a bit buggered and the catch cup does not screw on properly or easily. It goes on and stays in place, but not correctly.

Davidson's 1886 Patent Coffee RoasterDavidson's 1886 Patent Coffee Roaster  This unusual coffee roaster was patented in 1886 by O. E. Davidson of Nashville Tenn. It is a rare and near unique design. Cranking the handle that is housed in cast iron handle that looks like a corn cob activates the cast iron gear, which engages the ring, which moves the articulated feet inside and the center blades to stir up the beans as they were roasting. It is a very ingenious setup that looks like it would work well. The patent can be viewed easily by putting the title into Google. Beyond that there is little to no info on this rare piece of Kitchenalia / Americana.

The tin top, which resembles a Chinese hat is correct. It does have some minor damage. The main pan, the mechanism and its moving parts, including the ring are all cast iron and in nice undamaged condition.   Much rarer than the cannonball design roaster that you see offered once in a while. Nice!!

Cannonball Coffee RoasterThe Cannonball Coffee Roaster This revolving coffee roaster is a Patented idea that is commonly referred to as the cannonball. It comes in 2 sizes that I know of and both are very hard to find complete. They are oftentimes missing the base or ring. This one is complete.

Primitive Revolving Coffee RoasterPrimitive Revolving Coffee Roaster This small primitive tin coffee roaster is a bit different from most found or seen. It is complete with its small tray for holding burning coals or other hot material to roast the beans. The revolving canister with sliding door is housed in the enclosed body surrounding it. It has numerous decorative cutouts for ventilation. It has some rust on the outer housing but nothing major or that would not clean or look better with a cleaning and oil or wax treatment of some sort. This unusual coffee roaster is a top-shelf piece you'll be proud to own and show off!
