Roneo Self Feed / Clamp on Pencil Sharpener  The condition is great. The decal is 90% or better and so is the paint. It has a single mill cutter that they called an Automatic screw. It also has a self feed feature. Nice!!

Favor / Guhl & Harbeck  Jupiter #1 Pencil Sharpener  This lathe type Jupiter Pencil #1 Sharpener is very nice. The decals and paint are in very nice condition. It is marked Favor and was made by Guhl & Harbeck for the American market given that the instructions and all other writing are in English. The drawer is original.

There are a number of different variations of these sharpeners that can be found. It was a popular sharpener in its time. They were marketed here in the US by Favor, and can be found with all the writing in English. There is also a version marked Mossberg and I believe they produced that version after buying the rights. A very Graphic sharpener for the collection and priced reasonably.

Futuramic Pencil Sharpener  This is a great looking Futuristic design sharpener. I have seen it described as being Eames era and it has a great design aspect to it.  Best of all it was built to last and is in excellent condition. The plastic housing is still good and not cracked or otherwise damaged. Ready to be mounted to a desk or the wall, it will make for a great user or accent piece in the decor. Note in the last picture what the collector paid for this from the Santa Monica Antique Mall about 20 years ago. The overall condition is very nice!!

The Agra Pencil Sharpener This pencil sharpener is German or some other nearby European country. There has been some paint loss to the front decal but in general is still in very nice condition and operates as it should. The interesting feature with his design is that to load the pencil you turn the crank in reverse and the jaws open up and when you begin turning it clockwise the little jaws come out to hold it firmly while the 6-blade cutter does its job.

Patented 1905 "Handy" Pencil Sharpener  This is a rare and unusual antique pencil sharpener. The patent was granted on Nov 28th 1905 and that info is cast into the body.  I have dealt in and sold sharpeners for a number of years, and this is the first one of these I have had or seen.

It does have a casting crack and is damaged, but looks great as it hidden inside the body cavity which is covered with a removable shield / drawer of sorts. The previous owner stabilized it using silicone which can not be seen when it is assembled. Thee is no looseness to it that can be felt.  This rare collectible sharpener will still be a great addition to the advanced pencil sharpener collection. This collectible pencil sharpener has never been offered on eBay that I can recall and there are none in Worthpoint's  database either.Opportunity!!

Nickel Plated "The" Handy Pencil Sharpener This style sharpener can be found in several variations and finishes. The nickel plated model is not seen very often. That is all original finish you are looking at and the nickel plating is in super condition as well.  It is a Super One!!

The Handy Black Japanned Pencil Sharpener This style sharpener can be found in several variations and finishes. The black version is more common,  finding them with the directions intact, or w/ advertising is another option. There are also different cutter set ups. That is what made them so popular as a collectible for a while. Nice!!

The Rockford Pencil Knife Co. Pencil Sharpener The condition of this unusual and rare pencil sharpener could not be any nicer. That is all original finish you are looking at and the nickel plating is in super condition as well. After attempting to use it,  I can assure you that they never put this up against a penknife in a contest or bet and

won. This thing in operation is just about worthless, but then I guess that is part of the reason that they are now so collectible and avidly sought. It is a Super One!!

The New Era Pencil Sharpener  I can assure you that they never put this up against a penknife in a contest or bet and won. This  is just about worthless, but then I guess that is part of the reason that they are now so collectible and avidly sought.It has a blade sharpening stone inside that revolves and sharpens the cutter that also revolves. The pencil also revolves. Problem is you cant see what is happening, and it hardly works. It only cost a $ 1.00 when new. Kind of like the crap in Wal-Mart or at the Dollar Store. Crap.

Silver Plated Pencil Sharpener  This unusual pencil sharpener is unmarked and I have only seen one other similar to it in many years of looking. That one was brass, and there was some information on the base but I did not note it. This example looks great and is operational. It has had a repair done where the top meets the bottom. It had torn loose and the connecting piece was missing, but it has been reunited in the best fashion I could devise and now looks just fine. The only other one I know of now is on The Office Museum Site, and that is this same one in case you think you have seen another. That site, there is a link at the bottom of my office page, has a great display of some super rare and desirable sharpeners, be sure not to miss it..

The Star Pencil Sharpener This  wonderful little pencil sharpener / pointer combination hails from Portland Maine, and although it says it is patented there is no date or # to be found on it. It is in super condition, as is the very fragile paper label with the directions and other important info. It is a hard to find specimen, and rarely offered in this condition.  On the other side, which is not shown there is a cone shaped orifice with knife that you insert the pencil to for the initial sharpening, and then the rest is a file to finish off the point.

Angell Pencil Sharpener This is one of the most unusual and graphic of all patented American pencil sharpeners that are available. The design and action are second to none with its two disc-shaped cutters gliding up and down the central pencil holding shaft while at the same time a  mechanism at the top helps you to rotate the pencil only in the proper direction. There is also a very ingenious and complicated gizmo adjuster provided for rotating the cutter so that a new sharp area can be brought into play with a simple lever motion of the small arm out in front. The body says "Pat Pending" in raised letters, and on the other side gives the location of "Boston Mass. USA". The shaving drawer is original, proper, and marked with the name. A tough one to find!

The Everett Pencil Sharpener The condition of this unusual and rare pencil sharpener could not be any nicer. A small stash of these were found and disbursed and then they became rare again. This one was bought in a Christies auction on a day when nobody was watching, or cared, and the shipping, taxes, tariffs, vats and buyers premium came to more than the bid. That was pre-internet, the good old days.

Meyer Nickel Plated Pencil Sharpener These unusual sharpeners came in a japaned version as well. They are seldom seen probably because they are so late, and were so expensive compared to the new generation of inexpensive Dexters and the like that they were competing with.

Jupiter Front Crank Pencil Sharpener  This variation of the Jupiter Pencil Sharpener is referred to as the Front Crank Model, and I believe was the earliest or 1st model produced. This example is in good condition and still retains a lot of original paint. It is fully operational and works to boot. These first models do not have a drawer for the shavings and never did. The second model found below does.

Jupiter  Pencil Sharpener This variation of the Jupiter Pencil Sharpener is referred to as the End Crank Model, and I believe it is their later model. This example is in good condition and still retains a lot of original paint. It is fully operational and works to boot.

Johnson's Perfect Pencil Pointer The brass label on the end, in addition to having the above name also gives Chicago as the location, and goes on to further say that there is a Patent Pending. I have never seen a picture in the references available or seen a patent for it in he book on the subject. I tried it out, and it works great, but the truth is I got a better point with the pocket knife without it. Another example of American Marketing at its finest, only this guys idea seems to have fallen by the wayside before it really got going as it is one of the rarest of rare sharpeners that is known.  I have never seen another, and know of no others in collections, or for sale, do you?

Porter Cable Pencil Sharpener This is a rare sharpener and I have only seen or heard of a couple of these in all the years I have been paying attention. I got it one night at an auction where all the ones you recognize sold for twice retail, and all the ones I had never seen went for, well lets just say less. I remember the first person I showed it to said it was a wire stripper, and then asked how much it was. So much for honesty and advice from dealer friends in the business. I don't deal with him anymore.

Gould & Cook Pencil Sharpener There are just a few pencil sharpeners that are based on using sandpaper or other forms of abrasive to accomplish the task at hand. This version is one of the most popular and well known of them, and hails from the unpronounceable town of Leominster, MA. This example is in excellent condition and exhibits no problems to speak of.  To use, simply insert your pencil or slate stick in the holder provided (often times broken off), and while turning the crank you would gently apply pressure by rotating the holder toward the wheel, thus resulting in a perfect point and a pile of black dust at the base.

The Dima Pencil Sharpener This is one of the most unusual and most sought after of all foreign pencil sharpeners. It is Swiss, and in super condition still retaining nearly all of its original black japanned or painted finish. The decal with the name in the front has mostly worn away, but the outline is still there. In operation you would put the pencil in from the left and turn the crank, while pushing the lever which raised the spinning disc up to sharpen the point. All while you were watching through the window provided. These were introduced early in the last century, and as they were so late were not produced for long. The first one that went off on eBay, a couple years ago, bought close to $2500.00, and since then I believe only one other has been offered. Unlike the Jupiter or a few other sharpeners that are seen there nearly every week. A rare, and desirable piece!!

Early Model US Automatic Pencil Sharpener  The U S Automatic Sharpener was first patented in 1906 and is a pretty common sharpener.  They were made for a number of years and went through several changes during that time. . This is an earlier version.

The sharpener is nice and the decals are as good as one could ask for.  An opportunity to upgrade and improve the collection with a nice piece.

US Automatic Pencil Sharpener in Original Box  Check out the condition. Sure you can find U S automatic Sharpeners pretty easily, but You will never find a  nicer or more complete example in your search to fill out  or upgrade the collection.

The box is near mint, and the lid still fits and works like it should. The sharpener is minty nice as well, and the decals are as nice as I have ever seen. The instructions inside the bottom of the drawer are in super condition as well. There are also 3 NOS blades as well and one is in its package. The opportunity to upgrade and improve the collection has never been better. A super piece.

Peerless Pencil Sharpener   This Peerless pencil sharpener is the 3 cutter version and is very hard to find. It also came in a version that has 2 cutters that is equally rare. The condition of this one is great except for the missing paint on the drawer and along the bottom on the back side. It seems it got wet at one point in its life, but the damage was limited to these 2 areas.  This sharpener's most unusual feature is the design of the circular cutting discs, and the way they are set up to revolve slightly with each revolution of the crank exposing a new cutting surface to help keep the blades sharper longer. It is an interesting and rare sharpener, and the missing finish is something that can be overlooked as they do not come up for sale very often.

US Automatic Pencil Sharpener by Asprey of London   This pencil sharpener is another example of the power of the trade. It was not for sale and yet I got it, and he thinks he got the better of me while I  think not!  The base and knob are ivory while the bottom drawer and housing are sterling silver and so hallmarked. On the front of the drawer it is marked / hallmarked "Asprey of London", and the hallmarks date it from 1909. Asprey is the English equivalent of our Tiffany Co. and nearly as famous. This super piece was probably made up as a presentation piece for some king,  president, or other big-wig in some high office or position, and that is why I now have it on my desk. A one-of-a-kind,  never before seen piece, and all it cost me was a sewing clamp that I got at an Engine Show one day. It took two days of careful negotiation to get that clamp out of the display case, but I finally won him over with my subtle ways, and the clamp was mine. It took even less time to trade that for this.

I have seen, and had several other unusual variations of U. S. Automatic Sharpeners, but this is the only one of these that I have ever seen or heard of. It is really a fantastic piece that deserves to be in a top collection somewhere. Now is your chance.

New Era Pencil Sharpener  This is an unusual looking vintage pencil sharpener. They were produced during the hey-day right after the turn of the century and sold for a $1.00 according to ads I have seen for them in old magazines. To operate you put the pencil in the front and pushed down on the plunger ----- repeatedly. The pencil would rotate and a round blade inside would shave and sharpen the pencil.  It was not only supposed to sharpen the pencil, it was also set up to sharpen the blade with a small stone inside. Well here is the deal with the New Era. They did not work very well, and this one is missing the stone inside. It is a good representation, and looks OK, but dont be thinking user here.

Nickel Plated "Handy" Pencil Sharpener  The Handy is a nice pencil sharpener that works with a sharp razor like blade that is used to sharpen the pencil while you hold it in place and turn while moving the knife blade up and down. The blade or cutter is marked with the name which is proper. This style sharpener can be found in different finishes and with different names as well. There are also other variations in the construction known.

The condition is very nice, and the directions, claims and guarantee are still present on the paper label on the bottom.  Different and nice!!

U. S. Automatic Pencil Sharpener  The Us Automatic is one of the best known and best working of the many different designs of Pencil sharpeners that were produced. It was an ingenious design that actually worked well unlike some of the other designs that were brought to market.  Nice!!

Premier / Beebe Pencil Sharpener  This is an interesting design. It utilizes a series of cutters mounted on the disc and has a self revolving feature as well. It is unmarked but I have seen versions with a drawer marked Beebe / Premier. i am not sure if they all came with a drawer or not, but this one does not have it.

Handy Pencil Sharpener w/ Pitner Shoe Store Advertising  The condition is second to none. The bottom instructions are complete and fine. The paper label inside the shaving area is still nice. The cutter is original and marked. I  imagine the original recipient looked at the length of and detail in the instructions, put this in the drawer and got out the knife. It looks to have seen no use. As good as it gets.

Acme Pencil Sharpener   The Acme Pencil sharpener was patented in 1886 and marketed by the Eagle Pencil Sharpener Co. It is a very rare and unusual pencil sharpener. I have never had or seen one before. As far as I could determine there are very few examples known and they are housed in the top collections. There is one pictured on the site dealing with sharpeners that provides historical info about different pencil sharpeners.

The Acme pencil sharpener has a great action with a 4 blade revolving disc that revolves around the pencil while it is revolving shaving the wood and lead point. The mouth or opening on the front is adjustable to allow for different diameter pencils. .Be sure to look at all the pics to see the mechanism and how it works.

 It is fully operational. The overall condition is very nice, noting that there is not much of the original paint left on the exterior. I have been told that the drawer was made of cardboard and so it is no wonder there is not one now. There is no damage to the cast iron housing and the internals are all present and nice.  A nice example and an opportunity that will not present itself again in the near future!!

Gould & Cook Pencil Sharpener   The Gould & Cook pencil sharpener was patented in 1886 and hails from Leominster Mass. It is a very unusual pencil sharpener with a revolving abrasive disc to perform the function. .

It is set up so that the disc and pencil both are gear driven and revolve to make it almost automatic. Almost.  The mouth or opening on the front is adjustable to allow for different diameter pencils.The odd part of the design is that there is no provision or means to deal with the mess.

 It is fully operational. The overall condition is very nice. There is no damage to the cast iron or other parts. There is no finish, but none that I have ever seen were, and I am sure they were offered like this in natural iron.

A nice example and an opportunity that will not present itself again in the near future!!

Angell Model B Pencil Sharpener  This is a super rare sharpener, and this is the doubly hard to find nickel plated version with the drawer marked Angell B with an incised stamp. This was made by the Angell Mfg. Co. of Boston Mass, and dates from right around the turn of the century.

It is fully operational and has a great action as the two adjustable round disc knife blades are raised and lowered and the pencil automatically revolves as you turn the crank. Unlike many other sharpeners from this era the Angell Pencil Sharpener actually works well peeling off precision little shaving the neatly fall in the catch cup.

The condition is very nice with just minor losses to the nickel. A rare opportunity and highly recommended.

Webster "Double Donut" Pencil Sharpener  This pencil sharpener works with a single disc mill cutter housed in the top portion. The smaller bottom portion is for holding the shavings. The Webster was first introduced in the late 1890's. Later versions that are slightly different are marked Graffco. This one is in nice condition, and the fragile feet are good. The original japanned finish is 90% or better. A nice example!!

I  have additional NOS cutters for these for $10.00 each if you want to make yours perform better.

A. B. Dick Planetary Pencil Sharpener  This is a great pencil sharpener with a wonderfully complex looking mechanism to rotate the otherwise typical round disc mill cutters. This is the later second model and the earlier model has the feet connected with a bar. This design is adaptable to either be mounted on a wall or on the table by moving the feet to a different position. The condition is great, and the drawer is original.. A nice sharpener in nice condition.

Boston Polar Cub Electric Pencil Sharpener w/ Glass Cover  This early and unusual electric pencil sharpener dates from the mid 30's. They are very hard to find with the rare glass cover. The overall condition is nice with just some minor loss to the wooden base. The glass dome is nice and chip or crack free. The motor runs but the cord should be swapped out.

I assume these pencil sharpeners were designed for and marketed at users that required a dust free atmosphere and had to continually sharpen their pencils as they were drawing and creating their next ideas in the lab or other dust free environment.. Or perhaps they were designed for the casual user who was afraid of the dangers of inhaling the dust particles created. .

I have only had one other of these complete one  in over 20 years of buying and selling pencil sharpeners. That other one came out of a collection as this one did. It is not something one is likely to walk up on at a flea or garage sale.   I do not think many were made, and that even fewer survived with the cover. This is a  rare opportunity.  Nice!!

A. B. Dick Planetary Pencil Sharpener  This is a first model Planetary sharpener. It is in super condition. The Planetary pencil sharpener has a wonderfully complex looking mechanism to rotate the  round disc mill cutters in a planetary motion around the pencil. This is the first model with the feet cast as one piece with a bar connecting them. This design is adaptable to either be mounted on a wall or on the table by moving the feet to a different position and reattaching. The condition is great, and the drawer is original with the small clip.. A nice sharpener in nice condition.

Guhl & Harbeck Original Jupiter N Pencil Sharpener  This is the Americanized version of the famous Guhl & Harbeck German lathe type pencil sharpener marketed in the US by Favor & Ruhe of New York. It is in exceptional condition with nearly perfect decals and writing throughout. Even the drawer still retains it weekly oiling instructions to keep it running like new. To use you would pull back the holder, insert the pencil, and start cranking. The cutting is accomplished with a round disc type mill cutter. It is sharp and it still works good.

A good opportunity to upgrade the collection as you will not find a nicer condition example anytime soon.

Victor Pencil Sharpener  This is a later self feeding model that uses tow roller type mill cutters. It would be screwed to the table top. They were also offered with built on clamps. Used but OK.

Climax #2 Pencil Sharpener  The condition is nice.The Climax sharpener was the first sharpener of it kind to use the roller style mill cutter developed and introduced in the early 1900's by Olcott. Other companies later adopted this idea with great success and this style cutter became the norm. This style sharpener was offered in several different models, some having self feed mechanisms, and different bases.  Nice!!

Patented 1909 Challenge Pencil Sharpener  The Challenge pencil sharpener is one of the rarest pencil sharpeners known. The patent for it was issued on July 10th 1900 to a partnership of two fellows with the names Cook & Grover. I do not know if there is any relationship between this Cook, and the patentee with the same name who patented the Gould & Cook pencil sharpener. There are just a handful of this rare pencil sharpener known or in collections.

I believe the price paid for another one of these sharpeners ties the previous record sales price for any pencil sharpener. This example is in as near nice condition as that one, and I would know because I was the individual that sold that other one. That figure is in the mid 5 figures and tied with what a boxed Chelsea Pencil Sharpener brought a few years back at a well know east coast auction.  Given that I have had and or seen several Chelsea sharpeners I believe it is a far more common sharpener too.  

This sharpener is is in super original  condition and fully operational. It is a wall mount design with the thin cast legs on the back side. The design and action it utilizes for the sharpening is great. It uses both a small knife blade cutter and a tapered grinding wheel to perfectly sharpen a pencil.It has a thumb operated force feed lever for the grinding wheel, and a self feed feature for the main body that operates as the crank is turned.

The condition is very nice with just minor losses to the original black japanned finish. A rare opportunity and highly recommended.

Cast Iron Mushroom Base Roneo Pencil Sharpener  Most Roneo sharpeners are very common. This mushroom base model is the exception. It is too bad the cosmetic condition is not nicer.

Goodell Perfect Pointer Pencil Sharpener  The condition is super. This is the only one I have ever had with the hold down wires.

Lakeside Pencil Sharpener  This is a rare and hard to find pencil sharpener / pointer. It is in very nice condition. The drawer is original and nice. The decals with the name and info is nice and show just minor wear. This one says Patent Pending, and I have read it was patented in 1911 so this must be an early version. It operates with a large grinding / mill cutter inside. You had the ability to adjust the angle of the holder out front for the perfect point. It is still sharp and operates well.

Goodell Perfect Pointer Pencil Sharpener  This unusual pencil sharpener is commonly referred to as the donut. The pencil fits into the hole provided and then you were to slide the donut back and forth on the rod that had a built in gear gizmo which would rotate the pencil for you as it was filing the point on the file below. Get the pen knife out.

The overall condition is nice. There are remains of the instructions remaining. The bent wire hold downs are as usual missing.

US Automatic Pencil Sharpener in Original Box  You can find U S Automatic Sharpeners pretty easily, but you will rarely find a  nicer or more complete example in your search to fill out or upgrade the collection.

The box is nice and I believe the earlier type.  The sharpener is nice as well, and the decals are as good as one could ask for. There are two replacement blades in their holders, and fragile instructions.   An opportunity to upgrade and improve the collection with a nice piece.

Patented Nov 23 1886 Pencil Sharpener  This is the only known example of this rare and unusual patented antique pencil sharpener.There is no patent, maker, or other info stamped on it, nor is there any info to be found in the few references available on antique pencil sharpeners. Careful and painstaking research has turned up the patent #353061 issued for this design issued in 1886 to Thomas Alexander Henderson of Natchez Mississippi. 

This unique pencil sharpener is designed to operate somewhat like a Goodell Perfect Pointer seen above, but is a bit different and has a design that is a bit more more simplistic. The inventor of the Goodell likely used this patent as a take-off point /  basis for his patent. The patent for the Goodell was issued / grantedt a few years and 70,000 some patents later than this design.

The main difference between this design and the Goodell, and its main design flaw / drawback is that there is no provision to tilt the pencil in the holder in relation to the abrasive when drawing it back and forth to sharpen the pencil.  The pencil holder runs on 2 rods, one with teeth designed to rotate the pencil, and one smooth to stabilize the holder and pencil it as it was used. The single rod design of the Goodell  allows the user to change the angle of the the pencil holder in relation to the abrasive / sandpaper strip being used to sharpen the pencil body and lead.Its as if the inventor / maker of this sharpener felt that the pencil needed to be more stable to be sharpened properly.  It was later determined that this was too limiting and later designs did away with this 2nd stabilizing rod.

The overall condition of this sharpener is very good. The gear inside the wooden block is wooden and damage free. It is set up like the design in the patent with minor differences. It actually operated pretty nicely. A rare and important sharpener for the serious collector who thought he had them all, and needs just a few more  A one of. Opportunity!!

Louis Meyer Vertical Pencil Sharpener  This is a pretty rare sharpener in the scheme of things.   Later than some, but harder to find than most. The overall condition is great. the nickel plating 95% or better. It is a self "gravity" feed design. The tag on the front says it is guaranteed for 3 years, and I am prepared to extend that warranty to the new owner for the same period.  A good one!!

US Automatic Pencil Sharpener w/ Hansell - Elcock Company Advertising   The U S Automatic Sharpener was first patented in 1906 and is a pretty common pencil sharpener.  There are numerous variations known, some on taller bases, some with advertising, and some out of different materials like Ivory or silver. This advertising example was a give away from the construction and architectural Iron firm Hansell Elcock of Chicago Ill. It is dated 1909 - 1910 and has the sharpeners patent info below that. Kind of a neat sharpener that I have only seen once before.

National Safety Check Punch / Check Protector  The only marking to be found anywhere on this interesting and uniquely designed check protector is what I assume to be a serial # under the sliding bar of 1115. The overall condition is great and has an interesting and super design applied to many of the surfaces as well as the gold highlights  on the numbers and on the top. There has been some nickel loss to the levers, but that just goes to add to the authenticity and character of the piece. I have had plenty of these over the years, but this is the only one of this style I have ever had.

The Williams Check Protector / Punch This is a great example of early office technology, and was manufactured by the Peter Hooker Co of London England who it appears also had offices or a plant in New York as well.. Note the overall condition. It is immaculate. It has 100% of the glossy black japanned finish, 100% of the Decals and the labels and pin striping, and 100% of the nickel on the front plate. Inside there were about 10 pieces of loose chad from prior attempts to view the operation, and I would venture that it saw little if any further use over the next 100 years or so. There are a series of patent dates embossed into the front as can be seen, as well as info on the New York Address and a serial # of 25,449. This is a fine piece, and the caveat of condition condition condition is as important as the general scarcity of this fine example. The one apology is the leather closing strap has broken off. This is minor, and in no way affects the look or feel of this great piece.  The Best!!!  I have also listed this one on my collection pages, but if the superior condition is as important to you as me, then you can be the next curator of this one.

Abbott Automatic Check Perforator This wonderful piece of early office memorabilia is in super condition. The original gold speckled finish is super and the patina on the brass and other exposed surfaces is great. The small brass plaque on the front carries 3 different patent dates from before the turn of the last century. The operation is flawless and what with the new interest in chads and such these early office devices are sure to have a further surge in popularity as a testament to the enduring technology that some of us are still subjected to every time we vote.

The Automatic Check Protector Writer  This is a great example of early office technology, and was manufactured by the Brady Mfg. Co, or the Automatic Bank Punch Co, depending on which label you are reading. The overall condition is very good, with just some minor rust and nickel loss on those parts that were nickeled. The original paint and decals are excellent as are the stenciled name and instructions on the back, and the numbers on the top. The feed mechanism works, and the punches do also. The supply of these wonderful devices is quickly drying up and office technology collecting is hot so get it while you can!  These punch type check protectors / writers create their own form of a chad, and I would wager that all devices that work on this principle will gain in popularity and desirability as the reality of just how important a chad turned out to be in that last fiasco finally sinks in, and people begin collecting memorabilia related to this type of technology.

Lighting Check Protector   Here are 2 slightly different versions of a pretty hard to find check protector. The first one on the left carries its ID tag on the front on a removable tag. The one on the right which is just a bit nicer condition wise, carries its id above and behind the front pillars on a plate. I believe this one is just a slightly later model. The original patent was in 1890, but there are more referred to no the tags of both. The interesting feature on this version is that the bottom table has the ability to swing from side to side. I did not try analyzing this for very long, but it is a feature I have not seen before on these devices. Probably just a means to copy the other features from somebody else's design. These are a pretty hard to find version, and the first i have owed in quite a while and came as part of a great deal that a very old time collector / dealer had assembled over the years and had been in storage for a number of years. When these are gone, neither he nor I will be able to go out and replace them again.

United States Check Protector   This is a great looking and very hard to find example of a check protector. They are rarely found in the original boxes. This one bears the name "The United States Check Protector."  It is in super condition and operates flawlessly punching or cutting out small impressions of the amount the check was made out for. "The Beebe" Indelible Check Protector Writer  Here is another very hard to find and early patented model of a check punch / protector. It was patented in the late 1800's and operates on the same general principle. Feed the written check in from the side. Select the amount one numeral at a time, crank the handle to punch that number and move the check forward and repeat. No wonder the more common inkers were introduced just a few years later.

Abbott Automatic Check Perforator  This is a nice looking example of a early and hard to find check protector. The Abbott was actually called a check perforator and you can see in the pics that it punched out each numeral with a series of needle like pins. It was patented in the 1890's and I imagine its production period was pretty short before cheaper and easier to make inkers pushed it from the scene.  It is all original and in super condition.

"Sanitary Envelope Sealer"   This was an idea way ahead of its time. And there are many other examples of the same mind set from the same era that can be found. It leaves me to wonder why I did not know of the dangers or remedy when i was licking envelopes in the 50's 60's and 70's. Where were the protectors of our health when we needed them. Given the current situation, I am surprised that these have not been reintroduced to save us from the transfer of the dreaded diseases known to be associated with licking and sucking and so forth.   Perhaps this will save you from one of those diseases and you should buy it for that reason, or perhaps it would fit into one of the anti - whatever museums that those folks will need to document their theories.

Commercial Cast Iron Patented Mechanical Envelope Sealer   This was intended to lick and seal envelopes as fast as you could feed them in one end, and shoot them out the other. I have a feeling though a lot of time was spent adjusting and un-jamming it. . A good one, in pretty good condition.

Hotchkiss Stapler w/ Tail   These model staplers with the tail are super hard to find. The simpler version had storage for a sigle row of 100 or so staples. With this auxiliary feature you could load up 4 or 5 times the amount. I do not know what besides gravity was supposed to make the staples advance, but perhaps that is why you see so few of them. A good one, in pretty good condition.

The Chicago Check Protector Imagine how strange these dinosaurs are going to seem when we go to a completely electronic form of payments in a few years. Early Patented Time Stamp    This antique Time Stamp simply says Sales Office, and then all the rest of the choices are changeable. The date, month, year, (the 30s), received, answered, and paid.  In the bottom there is a clock that was working the last time I wound it, but now I do not seem to remember how to turn it on. It is in good overall condition and the paint is good with some minor chipping, and there is some remains of gold highlighting but most of this is gone. Different and a must have for the vintage office collection.

Smith Premier # 2 Typewriter Clean and nice. The # 2 Smith Premier dates from right around the turn of the century. It is an up strike type operation with double keyboard for upper / lower case letters that must have slowed down the output.

Seems operable. It has the lid (not shown) that has lost a lot of finish, but is in decent overall condition.

Chicago Typewriter The cosmetic condition of the original black finish and decorations on this typewriter is great. The Chicago Typewriter was first introduced in 1898 and production ceased about 1912. The style machine can be found with other names as well. Note that it is a 3 row keyboard, and the top row does not start with a Q as is typical.

The typewriter is not operational. The nickel plating has not fared well, and there is some evident rust in places on exposed metal parts as well. The key do not work. I do not know why they are locked or frozen, and the carriage is also frozen.    It will display nicely, or add it to the collection.

Hall Patent Index Typewriter  This early and interesting index style antique typewriter is in very nice condition. The patent for it was first granted in the 1881 and the tag indicates another in 1886.   It was for the National Typewriter Co of Boston MA. Check out the instruction page glued to the inside of the cover case. The serial # is 13,907. It is missing a couple of small lock screws for the bell, and margin guide. Beyond that it looks to be complete, and is in excellent overall condition.

The World Typewriter This interesting and unusual typewriter was first patented in 1886 by a fellow named John Becker of Boston MA. Over the years a few different companies produced it in with slight variations. The first model having just upper case ability, while later models could do both. The condition of this example is second to none and its nicely patinaed mahogany wooden box has most of the original finish and in super condition including the red velvet like interior. It even still has the small retainer clip to lock the bar and carriage in place for storage and transportation.  The nickel plating is excellent as well with just a couple of ever so small spots missing. These index style typewriters are not rare, except when found in condition like this one is. Recommended!!

Remington #2 Typewriter w/ Tin Cover    The Remington # 2 was introduced in 1877 after its forerunner the Sholes & Glidden typewriter was discontinued. Everything seems to be here. The carriage moves freely, the bell rings, etc. but it is very sticky and need to be gone over. The key bars are wrapped in brown paper for some reason and it was so well done that it seems it would have had to be done when the typewriter was apart. There is just no room to do it in place. A mystery. There are many sites where you can read about the history of this machine and other typewriters. Far fewer where you can buy one.

The Merritt Typewriter  This interesting and unusual index type antique typewriter dates from the late 1800"s and was patented by M. G. Merritt of Mass. The overall condition appears to be excellent with the exception of the missing type bar, a common malady for this style machine. The nickel plating is very good with just a hint of corrosion on the paper holder at the top that would clean nicely. The platen or roller is round and nice. The removable ink roller is present as is the bell. The finish on the keyboard is excellent with just a few minor chips. All of the letters and numbers are great. The layout of the keyboard is interesting and I am sure laid out with an intent but it is beyond me.

Merritt Patent Typewriter  This interesting and unusual index style antique typewriter dates from the late 1800"s and was patented by M. G. Merritt of Mass. The patent stamp indicates it was patented in several other countries as well. The overall condition appears to be pretty good noting that the rubber platen roller is slightly deformed and has some cracks. It does still turn.  The type bar w/ letters is still present, but the guide w/ letters that would be affixed to the front seems to be missing. There could be more missing as well, I am not sure.   The nickel plating is pretty good with just minor corrosion that would clean nicely. The bell is present. The finish on the mounting board is good. The serial # is 15401

The Densmore Upstroke Typewriter  This interesting design upstroke typewriter, where the keys, hidden from view, come up and hit the platen from below, was first introduced in the 1890's and was gone from the scene after 1907. There were 5 different models introduced and as this one is not marked with a number, as most that I have seen, I assume it is a first model. These upstroke machines were much more popular than it would seem they should be and were produced by a number of different manufactures around the same time period. Being as I am one of those types who needs to see the work as it progresses, they would have had a tough time selling me one of these. Note the the space bar is wood, and that the overall condition is pretty good with most of the original paint remaining, as well as the decals. The carriage seems a bit loose, but moves back and forth as it should, and all seems OK in this area. A great reminder of how it use to be and a very graphic example of this style of machine.

The Densmore Upstroke Typewriter  This interesting design upstroke typewriter is in cosmetically nice condition, and  its metal top / storage box protected that aspect, but it is bound up and the keys do not seem to want to operate. Call the repair guy, oh, that was back then, go buy a new one.

Williams #4 Typewriter This typewriter was first introduced in 1891, and was invented by John Newton Williams of New York. The first patent was drawn in 1875, but it was not marketed until 1891, first by the Domestic Sewing machine Co, and in later years by the Williams Typewriter Co of Derby Conn.. It has an unusual design where the platen is located in the middle and the key arms do a "grasshopper like" leap up and then out before coming down to strike the paper. Very graphic. This is the model #4 and was introduced in about 1900. Although an interesting machine, its design was doomed by the introduction of more modern operating machines, and they faded from the scene after 1909. This example is in very nice condition and still retains most of  the original finish. It seems to be operational in all respects, but I think I would keep the computer plugged in. The case is missing 1 latch.

The Remington #6 Upstroke Typewriter  This interesting design upstroke typewriter was introduced by Remington in 1894 and was only produced for 2 years before it was replaced by the far more common #7 model. It was not until 1908 that they changed from this basic upstroke design and moved on to the thrust or front stroke models where the work was visible as it progressed. Remington started out as a manufacturer of sewing machines, and produced their first typewriter in 1873, the Sholes & Glidden, one of the rarest and most sought after of all typewriters. Overall this machine is in pretty good condition and basically just needs a good cleaning.

The Odell #4 Typewriter From an era when the idea of increased productivity was being thought about, and considered, but the technology was just not up to the task. These index style typewriters are a wonder and testament to what life was all about back then, just a mere 100 years ago. Can you imagine trying to do 40 words a minute on one of these. This example is in nice overall condition.  The nickel is approx 85%, and the type bar is present.  These machines were first introduced in the 1880s and were only a distant memory soon after the turn of the century.

The Hammond #12 Typewriter This antique typewriter dates from back near the turn of the century and is in super overall condition. I got it with the piece of practice paper in it, and it still appears to be working nicely. There is a minor amount of veneer missing on the outer covering lid, and a couple of cigarette burns in it, but this is mostly character.,  The interior wooden base is very nice. The keys are all here and it still types and the carriage moves as it should. It is typing is a very pretty italicized font. The one apology that I can see is that one of the ribbon spools has a chunk missing from it, and other than that you will love the condition and look of this early reminder of what typing use to be like.

The Hammond Multiplex Typewriter  This interesting design typewriter was introduced by Hammond in 1915 to replace their earlier models which had been evolving for over 30 years after they were first introduced in 1881. The collector who had this machine had a bad habit of throwing out the lids, and so although this machine is in very nice condition and still retains most of its paint and decals, the lid is missing.

The Automatic Typewriter   This is a rare and desirable Typewriter. It is considered  the first portable with a standard keyboard. I got it at an auction one night where the auction company chose to name and picture the $50.00 Blick typewriter they had and forgot to mention this one. One fellow ran it to 1K and then stopped. The auctioneer looked at the Blick, looked at this and asked him what was going on? He ran it to 2K. I sold it the next for more than any other typewriter I had ever had before or since.

The Franklin #7 Typewriter This interesting design typewriter was designed by a fellow named Wellington Parker Kidder and was introduced in about 1899. The line went through a few changes over the next few years and the final straight keyboard model was phased out in 1906 after the company was sold to the victor typewriter co. Overall this machine is in pretty good condition and basically just needs a good cleaning. The cover has been in place for most of the last 80 years or so and the machine and the finish stood up very well.

The Blick Typewriter  This antique typewriter dates from back near the turn of the century and what is here is in super looking overall condition. It seems the previous owner saw a story once about the electric Blick typewriter bringing a few thousand dollars, and he figured he had a real winner with this earlier manual version. He then wrote to everyone he could think of trying to confirm his belief, and began clipping all references to valuable machines he found. It is funny, because I got this after he died, and in all of the paper work that came with it he only kept stories about, or references to very rare and desirable machines, and those with very high values given. He must have thrown out the ones that attempted to tell him the truth about this ones true rarity factor or monetary value. I hope he died happy, as I spent an hour convincing the heirs that this was not the ONE. It appears that there may be a tag missing on the front that would have told you if this was the model #5, 7, 9 or whatever. Everything else appears to be here and it seems to operate. The box shows considerable amounts of wear with some veneer losses at the edges. This one belongs in a Restaurant or will be a California Decorators dream for her lawyer client.

The Corona Folding Portable Typewriter   This interesting design typewriter is not rare, but it is the perfect size and design for display. This Corona folding typewriter is in very nice condition, as is the paint and decals. The Standard Folding Aluminum Portable Typewriter   This typewriter predates the above Corona and the manufacturer was bought out by Corona and this model typewriter was not made for many years. Bennett Portable Typewriter   This small portable typewriter dates from the teens or so. They were a small portable machine that had a good design and were fairly popular. . The condition seems to be great noting that the screws to lock the carriage in place are missing. It advances, and the keys seem to be operable, but you can just lift the carriage out at will.

Blick / Blickensderfer Aluminum Featherweight Typewriter   This Blick Aluminum Featherweight Typewriter was offered after the popular model #5 and is basically the same machine with the same novel features except that it is aluminum and even lighter in weight. From what I have read and seen they also offered an Aluminum version designated the #6 that is also Aluminum and essentially the same machine.  The oak box has been refinished and is nice.The serial # is 176295. It is also stamped #501 Special on the underside. There are 6 different type wheels for all sorts of applications. I could hardly see the differences in them before going cross-eyed.  The condition of this example is very nice, and with a lite cleaning will look even better. Nice!!

Oliver #9 Typewriter   The Oliver typewriter has a great look with its unusual carriage and key design. They have great display potential for that old time look.  They were a very popular machine in their day and as this one shows there were at least 9 different models produced. The condition of this example is very nice, and with a lite cleaning will look even better. It seems to work, but is a bit gummy from old age and sitting around. Nice!!

Mignon Model 2 Typewriter  This unusual design typewriter is in nice looking cosmetic condition. It utilizes a pointer system to pick the letters after which the user would press the lever in front to type the chosen letter.  The metal ribbon to hold the pointer has been shortened a bit so it may not be fully operational. The paper Mache cover with the name and model # has a few cracks, but is solid and OK. The metal box with Mignon name on it is present and OK. There are two extra font wheels (not shown), and a second key pad (shown in one pic). These earlier models are much harder to find than the later ones that ere produced. It looks great and will make for a great display piece or addition to the collection of antique office equipment. Nice!!

According to Alder, in his book on typewriters, the design for this machine changed during its period of manufacture, going from a 3 row keyboard like this to a 4 row. There were also portables made. It is not a common machine, and the condition of this one is very nice. It seems to be functional, and just needs a lite cleaning after having sat on the collectors shelf for the last 20 some years.

Adler Typewriter   This 1920's era German typewriter was painstakingly restored and sold by the CA outfit This Olde Office back in the 1990's. It has a great look and although the lettering and writing on the top cover are not original it looks great. The overall cosmetic condition is very nice!! In his book on typewriters, Adler has a very complete and interesting write-up on this thrust style machine. It explains that machines like this, marked model 7 are in fact first model typewriters. This style typewriter can be found with several different names as well. It is not a common machine here in the US, and the cosmetic condition is very nice. It will make for a great display piece in the decorator scheme aimed at vintage machines from a by-gone era. Nice.

Hammond Multiplex Folding Typewriter   The Multiplex folding typewriter has a great look and was this companies competition for the more commonly seen folding Corona typewriters.  It is very compact for easy carrying. There are two extra fonts, and a couple other extra pieces i do not recognize. The original instructions cover both this and the regular size Multiplex typewriter.

Corona Folding Typewriter   This nice little typewriter saw very little use and is in excellent condition. There are just a couple of minor scuffs / scratches to the paint. The nickel is near 100% and the decals are near perfect. It includes the instructions, original oiler and brush inside the case as well. The ribbon is fine and the keys clean. Everything seems to be in order. The carriage moves freely, the bell rings, the keys work etc. The box is very nice as well and the key for it is here. The back of the instructions warn not to leave it out as somebody will lift it.Here is your chance.  Very Nice!!

Smith Premier #1 Typewriter   This is a first model Smith Premier #1 Typewriter with its original cover. They were introduced in 1889 and the #2 model came to market in about 1894.  The carriage moves freely, the bell rings, the keys on the double keyboard work etc. The nickel on the decorative designs is pretty good but dull. The leather covered box is pretty nice noting that it is wearing away as we look at it.Everything seems to be here, but it need to be gone over. Dirty but nice!!

Oliver # 9 Typewriter   The Oliver Typewriter is a very graphic and interesting looking typewriter with its raised strike key design that stood above the frame. The overall cosmetic condition of this typewriter is very nice. It seems fully functional but has not been tested or used. 1873 Patent Model of Telegraph Apparatus by George Little The overall condition of this telegraphic device is very nice. George Little hailed from Rutherford Park NJ and was a contemporary and competitor of Thomas A. Edison, Western Union, and others in the early developmental period of telegraphy in the United States. George Little was granted a patent for this "Telegraph Apparatus" on September 2 1873. The patent number is 142486. The patent and images are viewable on Google and it is a close match. The telegraph receiver patent model is mounted on a round cast iron base and has its original tag and ribbon.

The patent describes how this design will improve transmission rates and alleviate the problem of the signal becoming garbled or running together in rapid transmissions. George little describes how this is accomplished in some detail that makes little sense to a novice but it was novel or important enough to be granted a patent. A passage found on the internet mentions that Daniel Craig founder of the American Rapid Telegraph Co. in 1879 touted Little's patented telegraph invention as making it possible to send 100 word letters out for a dime, and that later they would charge by the yard. The company went bankrupt in 1884.

George Little was a well known figure in the development of telegraphy. He was issued his first patent back in the 1840's during the infancy of the telegraphic revolution. Google searches turn up reams of info on him and his endeavors. He held several other earlier telegraphy related patents that are mentioned in the patent for this device as well. He also held a patent for a electro magnetic motor. Several references noted that Thomas Edison claimed he could improve on Little's original invention and worked on it.

An interesting, important & unusual piece of telegraphy and early communication technology!! Opportunity!!

Signal Electric SW - 37 Relay / Sounder - c. 1945 NOS Telegraph Equipment  Minty Nice / NOS in Double Sealed Waxed / Waterproof Box. I imagine it was a Government contract / purchase and sold off as surplus long after WWII ended. If I am reading the label right it dates from 1945. The label indicates it is a telegraph relay.

It is back in the box after being carefully cut open to check the contents. It is such that it is hard to tell anyone ever went inside once the flaps of the inner box are folded back into place.

Jno. Martin & Co. Electrical Engineers Co. Electric Control Panel  This unusual early electric control panel is huge and very heavy. Look at the second pic to see its size in relation to a pallet jack. I think it weighs 800 lbs or so, but have not weighed it. It is nearly 3' wide and over 5' tall. The largest knife switch is 16" long. The two Weston meters near the top are 10" Dia. One is an Ammeter and the other a volt meter. The voltage control wheel below the meters is by Ward Leonard.  A true Steam Punk - Frankenstein Laboratory type piece for the collection or display.

This is original and not a cobbled up or made up thing. My understanding is that such things were used in large theaters and the like to control the lighting back in the early days of electricity.  Minor damage to 2 bottom corners of the slate or marble board. It is bolted into the crate seen and about ready to be shipped. I can get it to a shipper but will not know the cost of that till I know your location.

J. H. Bunnell & Co. Pen Register in Wood Case  This unusual telegraph register is in super nice original condition. Comes w/ a roll of tape and the key all housed in the original wooden box. It appears to be unused.

I found a good description answering the what, how, and why questions of these devices online: Telegraph registers are electrically-activated printers that receive Morse code messages. The message travels as a series of electrical pulses through a wire. The pulses energize the register’s electromagnets which move a lever-arm holding a pen or stylus. A clockwork mechanism pulls a strip of paper across the pen or stylus, recording the message. Short pulses draw or emboss a dot, slightly longer pulses a dash. The sequence of dots and dashes represent letters and numbers. Wikipedia had much more info if interested.

Bunnell & Co. Telegraph Sounder w/ Resonator Box on White Folding Stand These were used on Railroads where space was limited. The telegraph operator could pull the sounder out from is place up against the wall to get it closer, and because of the box would be able to better hear what was being produced over the background noise. The sounder is nice, and all the parts of the cast iron stand by White out of Mass are in great condition with a good look.   Nice!

Ultimate Transmitter Company "Portable Pocket Bug" Telegraph Key   A nice example of a hard to find telegraph key by the The Ultimate Transmitter Company, Los Angeles, California. There is a patent date along the front edge from  June 23 1925, and the serial # is 12614. It is otherwise unmarked, but plenty of info comes up on this companies telegraph keys consulting Google.

The overall condition of this unusual miniature telegraph key is very nice with just minor losses to the nickel plating. The hard rubber feet are original and the key pads are nice. Some other examples I saw online had a cover, but I see no evidence this ever did. I saw several other designs, but none exactly like this one. Interesting!! \

Hump Back Telegraph Key  This telegraph key is early and unusual. Note the form of the bar which is known as a camelback or hump back.  Note the paint and highlights still viable on the cast iron casting. I am not sure what if anything is missing from the two holes out in front, but the key itself is in fine original condition.

Electro-Bug Telegraph Key / Bug - Patents Pending by Electro Mfg. Co Fresno CA.  This unusual and uncommon Electro Magnet Controlled Speed Key in Original Box is in very nice condition and marked Patents Pending by Electro Mfg. Co Fresno CA.

This company moved to San Francisco, and that this key was patented, so this version hailing from Fresno being marked Patent pending must have been one of the earlier models.

It looks a lot like the Vibro-Plex Key. It has the added feature of an electro magnet and is much less common. The base measures about 3 x 6 1/2". The electro-magnet acted to help speed things up, or control the action if you got it going to fast, and the sliding lever by the Key was to adjust just how much control that magnet would exert.

It is stamped 10683 the bottom which I assume is the serial #. I had another one of these keys years ago in a different finish that can be seen in my past sales archive at AntiqBuyer.com. It was black, and this one is nickel plated, and that is in pretty nice condition. The outer box is pretty good as well, noting I put a new leather grip on top.

Patented 20th Century Telegraph Key   This is the nicest example of this style telegraph key that I have ever seen. The patent info is written on the base, and the decoration is bright and crisp as if it was applied last week, but it is original. The name comes from the fact that it was patented right after the turn of the century. It is also referred to as the pump handle key and was designed for those who were developing Carpel Tunnel with the typical style keys available. A rare and unusual piece in superb condition.

A short story concerning prices and the value of things. Years ago I bought this vertical key out of a shop here in CA for $800.00. Barely knew what it was and certainly had no idea what it was worth. I bought it because it looked great and the condition was superb. I sold it to a friend / dealer later that day for $1800.00. About a year later I had regrets I had sold it and tried to buy it back. My dealer friend still had it and wanted $2200.00 - I offered him $2000.00. He said no and would not budge. Several months later and after trying to get it for my price several more times, he got tired of me badgering him and he listed it on eBay. It brought just under 6K. That was back in the heyday or bubble days. Today they usually sell for under $1000.00 when listed on eBay. Leaving the questions - - - What is it worth?  AND What is any of it really worth?

The Rogers Telephone & Electric Co. Potbelly Telephone The potbelly or oil can style phone is unmarked as far as I can see. I am unsure who made the phone. The wooden box has the Rogers tag. The hand grip has splits and one is quite large. The guts are still in the base, but I did not photograph that.

Early Bunnell Camelback Telegraph Key This nicely detailed key and sounder with cast iron frame sits on a nice mahogany base, and is in very good condition.  There are no chips in the pads, the windings appear to be good, and everything clicks and clacks as it should.   In the front left corner, stamped in the mahogany is "J. H. Bunnell and Co. New-York". It also says "ohms" but it doesn't say how many.

Western Union 35-A Stock Ticker / Telegraph Key  This is a nice looking antique Western Union stock ticker / telegraph.The overall condition on this rare and desirable piece of Wall Street memorabilia is very nice. I am sure it was those fellows getting those bonuses who were driving the market a few years back when a few went for 10K or more. Prices have since fallen. Now that the "workers" are comfortably back in place and doing as good as ever will the price start upward again, or are they sitting on their gold. Give that man another bonus!!

Device To Measure Strength of Electrical Forces  This unusual device looks to be for measuring the strength of the electrical power you would apply to the coils. Increase the current and measure the amount of pull the magnetized coils exerted on the scale that was positioned over top. I do not see any makers mark, and this may be shop built at Case University for one series of experiments, or could have been built as a demonstrator for students to observe the "new" technology of electricity. Crude but effective.

This will make for a great display illustrating just how far we have come in the last 100 years. Just think about it. Electrical power was pretty new to the scene. New students would have little understanding of its powers or uses. It can give one pause to reflect on how much further we can go if science survives the current waves of politics, religion, and ignorance trying to turn off the power and sources of knowledge and thought. Again, a good reminder of how far we have come, and might go.

Crookes Tube on Stand  Early Geissler and Crookes tubes are getting difficult to find. There is no maker info on this, but that is typical.. This early Crookes tube, as with all the other pieces on this page, originated from Case Western Reserve University. This tube was used in the physics department to demonstrate the characteristics of electrons, and showing that they would not pass through a metal barrier. The make-up of this example would indicate its manufacture near the turn of the century. Everything look to be attached, and intact, but we did not attempt to test it.

and it described this tube as follows. Cathode Rays Carry Energy. The cathode rays from the hemispherical cathode are focused on a thin piece of platinum held above it by a glass arm. The platinum eventually heats up and glows red, showing that the cathode rays carry kinetic energy.

Max Kohl / Chemnitz Electrical Laboratory Demonstrator   Max Kohl of Germany was probably the best known maker of lab and classroom demonstrators in the world during his working years from the 1880's onward.This piece was used  in the classrooms of Case Western Reserve University back near the turn of the century when Dayton Miller was a professor there.

This is mystery device has electrical hook-ups that indicate it was powered up. The center affair with 3 red rods does rotate and move up and down, but I am not sure when, how, or to demonstrate what. Perhaps it has something to do with Magnetic fields and rotational pull . It has a great look, and is the sort of thing that will display nicely and be a great conversation piece. The condition is like new.

Antique Mirror Galvanometer w/ Scope  This device is for measuring small variations in current using light, a mirror, and the small scope seen.It is a very detailed and precise instrument. Light acts as the pointer, and when reflected off the mirror inside is capable of reflecting very small variations which can be read off the scale above the scope.   I do not see a makers name, but the markings appear to be in German, Galvanometers were made in different forms for different applications and for different levels of precision. A nice looking example!!

Hall Switch & Signal Co  Marked near the bottom "Universal Calling Key for Gill Selectors" I believe it is used like an intercom or annunciator to ring or notify different parties on any of the numbers on the dial. The clockwork mechanism inside seems OK.     Nice.

Arvin 532 Globe Catalin Radio The Arvin Globe 532 is a midget butterscotch - tortoise-shell catalin radio. The case is damage free with no cracks or chips. The grille looks good. The dial does not move, and the paper face is cracked. The knobs are a different color than others I have seen. I do not know if they are correct or not. Nothing happens when plugged in and the knob clicks on. Priced accordingly.

Atwater Kent Breadboard Radio The overall condition appears to be very nice and everything looks to be original. On the far right it says that it is a type TA and that it is a Detector and 2 Stage A.F. Amplifier  The Bakelite on the tuners and elsewhere appears to be very nice as well with no chipping or cracks. The tubes came with it and go with it, and I have not tested it or them, and this is being sold as is as I have no idea how to hook it up.  I still remember the first time I hooked up a car radio in my van and was upset that it did not work until my friend pointed out that the speakers were still in the box.
