The most popular and commonly seen Stanley block planes are associated
with the No. 9 1/2 series of block planes. The earliest types in the
series have a distinctive body design known as the excelsior style where the hump on the side rail
of the body is not in the middle. Plane with numbers like 16, 17, 18,
19, and others have much the same basic design but different finishes,
or lengths or other similar changes.
There has been extensive research done that resulted in type studies that can pinpoint changes in
design or features. For years they were only available in written
books like John Walters price guides, or Roger Smiths references on
patented planes. Today there are several sites that have either
copied those type studies, or others that have tweaked those or even
created their own that can be found online.
Below are examples
of 9 1/2 style family of planes that have been sold. Variations or differences in
price can be explained by several factors including condition, model #, age
or type #, etc.
Stanley 9 1/4 Block Planes
The 9 1/4 is the
simplest version or variant of a 9 1/2. It is the same size at 6" long and has a non-adjustable
throat.

Stanley 9 1/2 Block Planes Later c. 1900 - Type 13 On
The 9 1/2 Block Plane was first offered in 1872 and I
believe they are still making a version of it. Most users agree the
vintage models - pre 1970s are superior users. They are 6" long have an adjustable
throat and went through a number of minor changes before the type study
ended at type 25 when they were cordovan colored.

plane is like new. Used a few times and spent the rest of its life
on the shelf. The box is a bit tattered. It will make for a great user!

Stanley No. 9 1/2 Block Plane "Made in Canada"
This 9 1/2 is a bit of an oddity. It is a 9 1/2 marked on the bed, and cutter
made in Canada. I do not know the exact history or dating, but it
is pretty unusual to see or find. It has seen use, but has no structural
issues and could be used as is, or detailed out to be nicer. A good worker that could
easily be cleaned up to look better.

The type 9 block plane is the first 9 1/2 block Stanley offered with a round disc
lateral and still have the excelsior style body. The cutter seems to be
earlier than called for in the type study. The plane is OK and damage
free, but well used and shows age.

Type 3 Excelsior Style 9 1/2 Block Plane w/ Etch A early
and rare Stanley block plane I wish was in a bit nicer condition. You
can see traces of the Bailey Imp etch on the side. The main
apology is the throat chip. After that is is actually pretty nice.
It is what it is.
I had one of these probably 40 years ago with a good
etch and sold it at a tool meeting for a bit of a premium over a typical one, but
also a bit under the money. I then watched Dave
Paling a very savy dealer back in the daysell it later in the day for $2500 with an tail added.
Another lesson learned.

in with the cap up and it poked a hole in the fragile top. The plane looks

3/4 & 15 1/2 Tailed Block Planes
The 9 3/4 & 15 1/2 came with a rear handle known as, or
called, a tail. Proper examples command a premium. Given that the
handles have been reproduced, in whole or just the cast iron part of the
handle and the star nut to hold it in place. Proper Rosewood
Handles can come off of 45s. The 15 1/2 is a inch longer than the
9 1/2

9 3/4 Type 1 Tailed Block Plane (PARTS)The cap is nice. The tail is nice, the cutter is a
later replacement that is nice. The front moveable throat looks nice, but
not sure if the threads are going to be right w/ that brass screw in there.
The main body has suffered a near fatal fall at some point and now has a caved in side.
Check the pics of the back side. The tail, cutter and cap are worth the money
as parts, or it can be used as is.

looks pretty nice.The 9 1/2 was first offered in 1872
and changes in the design brought forth the type 2 in 1874. I
believe the front plate is an old replacement. It does not have
the full range of movement one would expect. Tiny flea bites in the throat, the rest is good.

c. 1890s Stanley No. 9 3/4 block plane is in fine overall condition.
According to the type study and its features it is a type 10 and the
first type to offer the front throat adjuster lever. It is the last excelsior
style w/o the handy feature. Type 11s introduced the handy feature in the
sides in 1898.
Nice near full length cutter with proper
J logo. Spots of light pitting and stains on the sole. Tail and
Rosewood knob
are nice. This tailed block plane saw little
use and spent most of its life sitting idle in a tool box. No real apologies and nice enough
and unusual enough for the collection.

Type 1
Stanley # 9 3/4 Block Plane Stanley
introduced the 9 1/2 block plane in 1872 and made the Type 1 for just 2 years
before making major changes to the design. Over the years they made a
number of modifications to the design, and there is a well done and very
detailed type study that has been done on these planes.
The
distinguishing features are the solid cap, style of the adjustable front and
body shape.
The rear handle / tail bracket is also a unique design used only on these early models.
While the 9 1/ is one of the most common of all block planes, the first
model or type 1 is one of the rarest planes Stanley made. Very few
appear on the market.

This tailed plane is in very nice overall condition.
It has a nice dark patina. The cutter is a sweetheart which I
cleaned.
The 15 1/2 is like a 15, which is like a 9 1/2 but an inch longer, and
has a tail, like the 9 3/4. The proper logo cutter
is long with plenty of life left. The japanning is 95% or better and

#15 1/2 Tailed Block PlaneThe collector identified this as a Stanley #15 1/2 but I
am not sure if that is right given the way the throat adjuster is set up in
reverse of Stanley's idea. I would bet it was made by a competitor who
used this set-up as a way around the Stanley patent. That would make it
far rarer than a typical Stanley, which is a pretty hard to find plane in its
own right. There are a couple small chips in the throat area.

been told it is more likely a type 9 with some swapped parts. I did not
carefully check that, but it sounds right. A prior owner did carve his initials into the side rail as seen
in the pics. A nice early example of Stanley's favorite block plane with the
hard to find tail that i have been told is for a later model.

18 Aluminum Block Plane Stanley offered
their entire line of Aluminum planes for less than 15 years and production ended in the mid to late 30s for
all the different size Aluminum planes they made. They offered the A
18 for only 10 years 1925 - 1935. The aluminum was very soft
prone to scratch. This example is pretty clean & nice!! To fill
out the collection, iron models are much better users.

Stanley made these
planes during the mid 20's after Aluminum became a plentiful and cheap material
to use. They are cute, lighter than their cast iron counterparts, and
certainly harder to find as they were only made for about 10 years or so.
It was a poor choice of material, and they never really caught on with the
buying consumer. The scratched easily, and they sometimes develop a rusting /
rot This one has some light scratches in the sole and a few surface black
spots that will clean. A pretty nice example.

pic, but i believe it is proper. They date from 1902 or earlier.

Stanley Type 2 #110 Block Plane w/ Shoe Buckle Cap The 110 block plane was first offered in 1875. The
first model had slightly different side rail profiles. This is a type 2
and was only offered for a year or so before Stanley made major changes to the
design doing away with the Shoe Buckle cap. The collectors tag stuck
inside the body of this indicates he bought it from Roger Smith back in the
70's. That is over 40 years ago.
The condition is very nice. The
shoe buckle cap is damage free. The front knob is so nice I am guessing it might be a replacement, but do not know.
A hard to find early and rare block plane in very nice condition.

No. 110 is a type 2 dating from 1875 -1876 only. It is damage free and the shoe buckle cap is nice.

Not on the same level quality wise as earlier versions, but a sight better than the

This 9 1/2 is a bit of an oddity. It is a 9 1/2 marked on the bed, and cutter
made in Canada. I do not know the exact history or dating, but it
is pretty unusual to see or find. It has seen use, but has no structural
issues and could be used as is, or detailed out to be nicer. A good worker that could
easily be cleaned up to look better.

lateral and still have the excelsior style body. The cutter seems to be
earlier than called for in the type study. The plane is OK and damage
free, but well used and shows age.

and rare Stanley block plane I wish was in a bit nicer condition. You
can see traces of the Bailey Imp etch on the side. The main
apology is the throat chip. After that is is actually pretty nice.

era plane. There is a hole in the top of the box because the plane was put back
in with the cap up and it poked a hole in the fragile top. The plane looks

9 3/4 Type 1 Tailed Block Plane (PARTS)
The cap is nice. The tail is nice, the cutter is a
later replacement that is nice. The front moveable throat looks nice, but
not sure if the threads are going to be right w/ that brass screw in there.
The main body has suffered a near fatal fall at some point and now has a caved in side.
Check the pics of the back side. The tail, cutter and cap are worth the money
as parts, or it can be used as is.

This is pretty nice overall. The tail is nice, the cutter is
long proper and nice. The front moveable throat looks nice.
The main body is rust and pit free. The one apology is the very small chip at
the throat.

looks pretty nice.The 9 1/2 was first offered in 1872
and changes in the design brought forth the type 2 in 1874. I
believe the front plate is an old replacement. It does not have
the full range of movement one would expect. Tiny flea bites in the throat, the rest is good.
Hard to find.

c. 1890s Stanley No. 9 3/4 block plane is in fine overall condition.
According to the type study and its features it is a type 10 and the
first type to offer the front throat adjuster lever. It is the last excelsior
style w/o the handy feature. Type 11s introduced the handy feature in the
sides in 1898.

9 3/4 is a type 2 dating from 1874 -1875 only. They are genuinely rare. It is in fine original condition. This unusual
6" tailed block plane saw little use and has no apologies. A beautiful example for the collection.

Stanley # 9 3/4 Block Plane Stanley
introduced the 9 1/2 block plane in 1872 and made the Type 1 for just 2 years
before making major changes to the design. Over the years they made a
number of modifications to the design, and there is a well done and very
detailed type study that has been done on these planes.
